Trick up Kansas City's sleeve?

06:59 AM ET 06.11 | If the Kansas City offense looks appreciably different than it did in 2012, that may be just as much Chris Ault's doing as Andy Reid's. [Ault], the brains behind the creation of the pistol alignment, coached quarterback Colin Kaepernick at Nevada, and San Francisco ran elements of that scheme last season. But although he does not possess Kaepernick's transcendent abilities, [Alex Smith] is a good athlete. He thrived in the same spread-option scheme at Utah under Urban Meyer that Tim Tebow did at Florida. Whether or not Smith runs some of the plays from his college days remains up in the air. The Chiefs have been covert about revealing Ault's exact role. ... [Reid] said that Ault will continue to live in Reno, Nevada during the season instead of in Kansas City.

As absurd as it may seem, this could be the most interesting team in the NFL this season. They have to improve. The only question is how much.

Not absurd at all. They have definitely done the most of any team in the off-season. We'll just have to see how it translates on the field.

Early round draft picks, 5 pro bowlers last year, add in a veteran QB and HC and that fourth place schedule bonus for being bad, and they will be a pretty good team. Parity.

You can't win the Kentucky Derby riding on a Donkey. Give it a few years for Andy and the boys to get the horses in place and they could start turning some heads for sure. Ain't happening this year though. Book it. 6 wins this year, 7 tops, but on the rise.

This is what I think also.

They can't get to the playoffs without winning a wild card, and that will take 10 or 11 at a minimum.

6 wins, 7 tops? 10 or 11? That's what I'm thinking, too. This team is totally unpredictable.

KC has the 5th easiest schedule in the league, statistically. It's interesting that of the 5 easiest schedules, 4 of them are in the AFC West. (Indy is the other.) Easiest? Denver.

8-8 or better is all I am asking for. Of coarse I have my own selfish reasons. 8-8 or better will give the 49ers K.C.'s 2nd round draft pick. A record less than that would give them K.C.'s 3rd round pick.

I think K.C. can beat either Oakland or San Diego. What will be interesting is how they do against Denver? They won't have their 1st game against one another until the middle of November.

The first thing they did was give Smith some protection by drafting Eric Fisher. Then they drafted Kelce a TE, Alex Smith likes throwing to TE's as much as he likes handing the ball off to his RB Jamal Charles. it was also important that the Chiefs re-signed Bowe. They need to get another WR, there are still a few homeless players out there.

A sure sign of the apocalypse.
