Maddon rips Lackey after plunking incident

07:13 AM ET 06.11 | The Rays and Red Sox played a 5:24 marathon Monday night that included a little bit of everything, right down to some bench-clearing drama. Sox starter John Lackey was upset walking off the mound at the end of the second, barking toward the Rays dugout. And it became obvious in the bottom of the sixth he was mad at Matt Joyce, who had homered in the first inning and dropped his bat after swinging at, and hitting foul, a 3-and-0 pitch the next time up. Lackey hit Joyce in the back, then suggested he didn't mean it. ... Joyce said it was "very obvious" and a "pretty bush league move" by Lackey. Rays manager Joe Maddon went further, saying it was "inappropriate" and an example of Lackey being "a bad teammate" and he could have been ejected.

Nobody is a bigger jerk when they hit a home run than Big Pappi, the bat flip and all. Surprised he does not get plunked more.

Madden is always yapping. And he throws at players as much as anyone. Joyce was posing and admiring his long foul. Idiot. Won't do that again.

Still sore about Game 4, 2004 ALCS, I see.

I didn't see it, but it seems Madden likes to be vocal quite often..............

How can Lackey think he was showing him up when he has hit less than 75 home runs in his career?

June 11, 2013  09:03 AM ET

Well - I did see it. I am NOT convinced the throw was intentional - but Lackey could have been acting too. Only Lackey knows. While I know it COULD have been intentional - you're staked to a 6 run lead - and it's down to 2, and you put another guy on base after proving you are not having the best control night? Seems counterproductive to me.

Nah, not at all. That's baseball. Any Red Sox fan knows he crosses the line when he jacks one too. It is just he is jacking them for their team.

All teams whine - part of baseball... and we ALL know that....

June 11, 2013  09:10 AM ET

Lot of games left to play. I suspect this kind of stuff is not over between these two teams.

Doubtful indeed. The thing I thought was interesting - was the way Salty was roughly pushing Joyce to the outside of the 1st base foul line. His hands were all over him, and Joyce wasn't really pushing much - if at all....

At least he was nice enough and did it right by hitting him in the back.

My thought too. The a## would have been better, but his control was off that game.

Not much going on again today....
