Tiller fumes over losing recruit

A star recruit's signing-day decision to renege on an oral commitment had Purdue football coach Joe Tiller fuming Wednesday. Roy Roundtree, a nationally ranked receiver and kick returner from Ohio, signed with Michigan on the first day of the college football signing period. Roundtree committed to Purdue in May and reaffirmed his decision many times since. He signed with new Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez after a visit to Ann Arbor, Mich., last weekend. "If we had an early signing date, you wouldn't have another outfit with a guy in a wizard hat selling snake oil get a guy at the last minute, but that's what happened," Tiller said.

I like his quote, that's pretty funny.

WHAT???? Joe, they might still have snake oil salesmen in Podunk Wyoming...but round here we call it choosing to go to a better program. Let's face it, Purdue is the Vanderbilt of the Big 10.

Wut?

Purdue is a second rate program and a second rate University. The kid choose a top 10 program (usually) and a top 25 academic institution. Honestly, I don't know what he was thinking when he originally committed to Purdue. At least Vanderbilt is a good school.

GO BLUE!!!!

You can understand the guy being pissed. Any coach would be upset if a star player orally committed, committed throughout the season, then SIKE! on Signing Day. It's kinda funny if it didn't happen to you.

Though that yellow hockey jersey is pretty snazy, its no wizard hat...

Most schools will loose at least one 3 or 4 star recruit; at least the schools that have more one multi star recruit LOL.

February 8, 2008  10:32 AM ET

He has a right to be angry. He put time and effort into the kid only for him to go elsewhere.

With that said: Welcome to Michigan, Mr. Roundtree. I look forward to rooting for you.

Oral commitments are over-rated and i'm not surprised he chose Michigan over Purdue if he's a stud player but if he didn't talk to Tiller until after reneging the oral and signing with Mich, Tiller has every right to be upset with him.

Joe Tiller is an absolute disaster. The only types of people who would want to play for that character are the types who would actually want to go to Purdue in the first place. I guess they're perfect for each other.

Some recruits are pressured way too young.

While Purdue may be second rate in sports, their engineering school is top notch. Some ball players do think about that

Remember these guys are just babies when they go off to college.

MDWolvarine4, Purdue is not a sencond rate University, they are an established top ten Engineering program and they have many new programs that have gained national respect. Based on the lack of inteligence in your statement, it is obvious you are a Michigan grad, let me guess you have a degree in Liberal Arts and Crafts? Purdue football is not to the level of Michigan but their basketball program is far superior to Michigan's now that we have a new coach. Hopefully the football program improve once the new football coach is here (not likely but I'm still hoping).

MDWolverine4...if you think this kid is going to Michigan because it is a top rate university than you probably also thought you had Les Miles "locked up." According to one of your heros (Jim Harbaugh) we all know where his academic path will take him.

February 8, 2008  12:11 PM ET

What a hypocrite, Tiller stole him from Ohio first....hahaha naw just kiddin' the dood sucks we didn't want him in the first place

February 8, 2008  12:36 PM ET

And buckeyepride passes MDwolverine for the dumbest comment on this thread. Congratulations!

I think we should see some better rules around "verbal" commiting.

General Studies -- where?

February 8, 2008  12:45 PM ET

Tiller are you in need of a tissue?

February 8, 2008  12:45 PM ET

Here's one, now dry your eyes and blow.

HAHA...I love when recruits do that; it's hilarious.
