07:25 AM ET 06.12 | For Ray Shero, Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle, Tuesday was a marathon of a day. The meeting began around 7 a.m. at Consol Energy Center and lasted until late in the evening. During the meeting, Shero made a strong push for approval on an extension for [Dan Bylsma], who is set to enter the final season of his contract. Shero wanted the coaching situation settled -- at least Bylsma's status -- so he could start finalizing a long-term contract with center Evgeni Malkin before turning to potential new contracts for winger Pascal Dupuis and defenseman Kris Letang. Shero also identified parameters of the commitment necessary to keep Malkin -- about $10 million annually, all of which would count completely against the salary cap. Ownership has authorized Shero to keep Malkin at almost any cost.

As a Red Wings fan, I hope Malkin's contract negotiations take longer to finalize than Datsyuk's. Holland needs to lock Dats in at $7M or less before Shero gives Malkin a ridiculoulsy bloated contract.

Last offseason, I opined that Goalies were not worth risking a long-term, big $$ contract. I am now convinced that scorers are not worth it either.

Leading scorer for BOS this year? Marchand 36 points
Leading scorer for CH? Kane 55 points
Leading scorer for LAK last year? Kopitar 76
BOS year before that? Lucic and Krecij with 62 each
CHI year before that? Kane with 88

etc

Go ahead, sink 10 of your 64 (approx) salary cap into one player. I dare you.

Nobody deserves Ovechkin money. Not even Ovechkin. Shero should have let it out long ago that nobody makes more than Sid. Same as the Wings unwritten Lindstrom rule. If a deal like this goes south your franchise is in the crapper for a long time.
