Seminoles snare top QB target

Hoping to fill needs across the board, Florida State landed the quarterback it coveted and a half-dozen offensive linemen Wednesday in its initial recruiting class since the school named a successor-in-waiting to coach Bobby Bowden. With quarterback Drew Weatherford embarking upon his senior season and Xavier Lee gone, the Seminoles landed quarterback E.J. Manuel from Virginia Beach, Va., who is considered an ideal prospect to run future coach Jimbo Fisher's offense. The 6-4, 200-pound Manuel threw for nearly 7,400 yards and 68 touchdowns in his high school career.

Any chance this guy starts over Weatherford?

I know that seems like a crazy question but Drew has been god awful for the Noles for a long time, now.

February 8, 2008  10:41 AM ET

maybe.....if Bobby will let a freshman take some snaps in a GAME, instead of just in practice. and i hope EJ lives up to the hype that he's received; we don't need another X Lee on the squad. :-)

February 8, 2008  10:47 AM ET

Now if only Joe Paterno could do this.

Bowden is turning it around even though he's an old timer. I don't know if it's because he fired his son or named his successor?

February 8, 2008  10:51 AM ET

PS FOrever, I think it a little bit of both. The way FSU played musical chairs at the QB position last year, the freshman may get a chance after a couple of games of Weatherford melting down

Hard to say HOVA, Poppa Bowden has a history of sticking with "his" guy at QB, Weatherford and Rix (Ugh) are perfect examples. If he sees something he likes in a QB, he'll keep playing him long after his assistant coaches try to convince him otherwise. I love Coach Bowden for what he's done for FSU, but this aspect of his coaching can drive me nuts. Weatherford is a Dyed-In-The-Wool Seminole and the consumate team player, but he HAS struggled mightily at times. I understand what our coach sees in Weatherford. I am a teacher in the same county where he played his HS ball, and I saw him play MANY times in HS. If you know about what kind of person he is, it's VERY difficult not to like him. Just a great kid, on AND off the field, who's wanted to be the Seminoles QB since he was a little kid.

Thanks for answering eyesWIDEopen. I think he will see the field at some point, because Weatherford will eventually screw up.

February 8, 2008  11:16 AM ET

Unfortunately, HOVA, you're probably correct about Weatherford, and with our recent downward slide I think the coaches will pull the trigger a LOT quicker this year.

I've seen Manuel ranked higher than Pryor on some sites, so he should be fun to watch.

I WAS unusual for Bowden to start a freshman at QB but he did it for Rix and Weatherford. I feel that is one of the problems that both the QBs had, they didn't get a chance to learn the system (it could be argued that under Jeff Bowden we didn't have a system) and were thrown into the fire.

Watching Ponder (was a Freshman last year) take snaps against a TOUGH Virginia Tech defense he didn't do too terribly bad until the 4th quarter when his inexperience kicked in. If anyone should get snaps it would be him. Ideally, in my opinion, you redshirt Manuel and go into the season with Weatherford (9 TDs 3 INTs 112 passer rating) and let Ponder be the unquestionable backup and let him fight for the sterters spot. If you saw the VT game, he's got some skills, dude can run too for a white boy.

I honestly feel Weatherford will have a decent year, I just hope he someone obtains a bionic arm in the offseason so he can throw it more than 25 yards downfield (one of the only reasons Lee actually was given a shot because he has a canon arm, and with Greg Carr at 6-7 you need to stretch the field).

February 8, 2008  04:02 PM ET

I forgot about Ponder. He should be given a chance ahead of Manuel. FSUDrew makes a great point about redshirting Manuel. It would help his development.

florida state and miami are coming back...urban meyer and the gators better watch out.....im not sure the offensive coordinators at miami and fsu are that great tho....maybe thats why the offense has struggled the past few seasons.

February 8, 2008  05:19 PM ET

Jimbo Fisher is a very good OC, he'll get the job done. Whether it's this coming season or the next, Fisher will help bring us back to greatness. You can take that to the bank. For the first time since Mark Richt left for UGA, we have an OC who can help put the fear back into our opponents' D.

Damn I love Florida State...

I see ya eyeWideopen!!

February 9, 2008  04:14 PM ET

eyeWIDEopen that is an excellent point; I would like to see FSU back in the mix (I dislike Urban Meyer) and it would make my wife a lot happier during the football season. She's a FSU grad and is tired of me taking shots at FSU (just for fun, I really like FSU) academically and about football (lately).

Actually FSU is my second favorite team after my beloved Trojans. The VOLS are third on my list.

February 10, 2008  12:47 AM ET

Nice to see the Noles get this player will certainly be a player to build around.

February 12, 2008  12:48 PM ET

EJ will be redshirted. The reason top ranked QB recruits have not panned out at FSU is bc we have started them too early. Bowden never had a freshman start before Rix. You need to develop your young talent both physically and mentally.

Rumor is...Ponder is better than Weatherford, so if Drew struggles he will get some snaps. The team respects Drew though and if he can learn to not hold onto the ball too long, things will start to click. I wish him all the luck. He's loved FSU since he was a kid, he is loyal to this program, and he has a work ethic like no other.
