07:14 AM ET 06.13 | On Wednesday, much of baseball was still talking about the bean ball brawl, and Mike Matheny sounded off on the incident. [Matheny] is against any of the pitches that stray too high in the zone, and he has seen one of the Cardinals' rivals this season have the catcher standing up behind the batter as if to invite the high and inside -- the danger zone -- pitch. "I think there are different philosophies on different clubs," Matheny said. "There is a club that we've faced a number of times this year that they keep emphasizing they want the catcher standing up behind the guy inside. That stuff drives me crazy. I don't think there's any room for it." ... Matheny did not identify the team that has the catcher standing up behind the Cardinals' batters at times. Another member of the club did: the Chicago Cubs.

it is not unusual for a catcher who wants a pitcher to climb the ladder on a hitter With two strikes on the hitter a catch crouch will be a little higher giving the target at top of strike zone. a fast ball at numbers level is hard for a hitter to get on top of.

June 13, 2013  08:26 AM ET

Matheny talked about a team they have faced several times this years where a want the catcher to stand up inside behind the hitter. Matheny would not name the team. but another member of the cards did name the Cubs. Matheny must have had too many concussions The Cubs that Matheny said they have faced several times this years The Cubs and Cardinals have played just 2 games so far this year. Besides the pitchers to have the right to pitch inside to hitters. occasionally a pitch will get away and clip a batter on hip or arm. Apparently Matheny thinks all pitchers should only throw to outside of plate

June 13, 2013  08:36 AM ET

A pitcher has to pitch inside to hitters to keep the hitters honest and from diving over plate expecting pitch on outside corner of plate.

June 13, 2013  08:50 AM ET

I agree that no pitcher should throw at head deliberately. However sometimes a pitch will get away and go up and in. I would say 99% of time no malice is intended. it is just part of game. After doing some research the Reds have been hit by pitches 41 times this year. their pitchers have hit only14 hitters this year. a recent series this year Pittsburgh their pitchers hit six reds.

June 13, 2013  08:50 AM ET

I don't think Matheny was talking about the Cubs since the Cards have only played them twice.

June 13, 2013  08:51 AM ET

They only played each other twice this year, not several times. Funny how no examples were provided either. I doubt Matheny would even approve of this message

I wish they'd win a game against the Reds every once in a while......seems like the Cub series is always a sweep for Cincinnati.

This should not be a surprise to him, Pitching inside is part of the Game, the Cards have known for that for years!

I wonder whether it might just be Navarro not crouching because his legs get tired carrying all his weight. Maybe it isn't being encouraged by the clueless Sveum or pitching coach Bosio.

Thats a good thing and the Cubs need to sweep your Cards would be a good thing......it will snow in hell tho befor that ever happens

St.L shouldn't complain too much after today the reds only have 6 more games with cubs. St. L. probably has 12-13 games with Cubs

I don't know. It seems that the Cubs always play their absolute best against the Cards, but they never beat the Reds.

Dusty Baker is a better manager than Dale Sveum and he has more talent. Plus, Sveum is doing a great job of ruining Castro and Rizzo.
