Time to panic for Boston's 1-2 punch?

07:15 AM ET 06.13 | Chalk the curious cases of Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester up to -- for now, anyway -- the Department of Bad Timing. What's completely unclear is if the Bad Omen Department is involved as well. The facts are as concerning as the trend is worrisome. ... Yesterday we learned that Buchholz' stiff neck is still giving him trouble and that Lester is at the lost-and-found looking for his misplaced delivery. It's never good to have any starter get hurt or go into a slump, but to have the two best starters on the team go down at the same time? Yikes. By this afternoon we'll know for sure, but from the way manager John Farrell sounded yesterday, Buchholz' next start, already pushed back to Sunday, is likely to be pushed back another two days.

Boston has enough depth in their pitching staff to cover Buchholz missing a start or 2. They brought up Alfredo Aceves from AAA Pawtucket to make an emergency start last night and still beat the Rays 2-1. But Lester's struggles are starting to be a concern.

bridge year, bridge year, bridge year. don't start believing that this is a world series team.

The Sox are a low to mid 80s win team. They are in first place largely because of the unsustainable start by their top two starters. It's been a fun and unexpected run though.

This is not the time to Panic, got a 100 more games to play!

That's just the Rays though. What happens when the Sox have to go to a real major League city and play a good team?

Such as?

At the beginning of the season I was agreeing with you.
But their hitting and defense has surprised me; if they continue to get decent, not great, pitching they should win the Division and perhaps go deep into the playoffs.
They aren't a great team but they do come to play every game.

I figured them as a 90-or-so win team and picked them to finish 2nd in the AL East.

They are not in first "largely" because of Buchholz and Lester. Their offense ranks in the AL 2nd in BA, 1st in OBP, 3rd in SLG, 1st in OPS and 1st in runs. Their bullpen has been adequate and their starting pitchers' ERA ranks 3rd in the AL. Certainly, Buchholz and Lester have helped in that regard, but they've only pitched 42% of their starters' innings.

Further, I find it odd that you would consider Lester's start to be "unsustainable." For almost five years, he was one of the most consistent and best starters in the majors. I am more surprised by his struggles than I am any success he may have.

Buchholz just needs to rub that stuff that gives him a better grip on the ball on his neck and it will loosen right back up. It cures a lot of ills.

Not a bad analysis by the opposition! :-)

June 13, 2013  09:28 PM ET

Why panic when they have a 3.5 game lead?

June 14, 2013  08:15 AM ET

Maybe Buchholz needs more spit and polish....ya, I said it!
