Crucial summer for Shero

07:20 AM ET 06.13 | Dan Bylsma and Marc-Andre Fleury are staying put, for now, which isn't to say Ray Shero's work is anywhere near complete -- something that became clear during a Wednesday press conference. For about an hour, Shero talked. The club is at an interesting, perhaps uncomfortable juncture. ... This offseason shapes up as crucial and trying for Shero. He will meet with his staff next week to go over a roster that is overloaded. The salary cap is going down. There are impending free agents. Malkin and fellow core player Kris Letang, a defenseman, are entering the final year of their contracts, and at least with Malkin there is urgency to get a new deal in place. "As we know, this team is going to change," Shero said. "That's the way it is."

With all of the talent Shero has brought to Pittsburgh and all of the talent he has kept in Pittsburgh, he has to be one of the best GMs in the league. I have my doubts about this move, but with his track record not much I can say. By the way, despite what we've been reading here Mario was completely in favor of keeping him too.

He was handed Crosby from the NHL. And drafted Fleury #1. Malkin was a slam dunk at 2.

Yeah really. Maybe they agreed that Malkin doesn't have to show up for the playoffs.

Looks like the Pens are parting ways with Letang then.
Shero has been on a hot streak dealing lately, hopefully we get a nice return for him.

Thing I just read

The Pens will spend 28.3% of their salary on two players that have missed 32.7% of the last 4 seasons.

Unless the 20014-15 cap goes up as expected.
