07:14 AM ET 06.14 | Jose Valverde's loss may be Joaquin Benoit's gain, at least for now. I've long maintained that whoever was closing nowadays probably wouldn't close come August. But Benoit would buy general manager Dave Dombrowski more time to properly assess his 25-man roster and make the correct -- not the reactive -- decision as the trading deadline approaches at the end of July. Bruce Rondon is probably getting another chance this season to grow into the role. He's the future. A full season in Toledo would've further steeled his nerves. But Dombrowski and Jim Leyland now have no choice but to throw him back in the major-league pressure cooker in the seventh or eighth inning and see how much he has grown -- if at all -- since his last stint up north.

They should make a run at Papelbon? I'm sure the Phillies would think about it.

The insufferable Jim Leyland will keep trotting the mashed Potato out there just to prove that he's in charge

You have a $150M payroll, and you're worried about another $13M when you are trying to win it all now? That makes no sense.
