Why Cavs aren't sure about Nerlens Noel at No. 1

10:30 AM ET 06.16 | The Cavs were reasonably confident that Kyrie Irving was healthy on draft day.The same can't be said for Kentucky big man Nerlens Noel. It's why the Cavs still aren't sure if he's the right choice at No. 1 -- despite what most mock drafts indicate. They love his defense, especially shot-blocking and quickness that leads to steals and deflections. He averaged 9.5 rebounds in 31 minutes, good numbers for an 18-year-old in the SEC. Two knee injuries in four years are a major worry. Little discussed is the injury to a growth plate in his knee, wiping out most of his sophomore high-school season. It's the same knee that suffered the ACL injury in February, ending Noel's freshman season at Kentucky after 24 games. He is not expected to play at least until December. The other issues are a lack of offense. At this point, he mostly dunks. Eighty percent of his field goals came within five feet of the rim. His 6-11, 206-pound frame is a slight concern, but he won't be 19 until next April. He can add weight and strength.

greg oden v2?

Noel could be the next Oden, or the next Ewing. Saw him play in prep school; his offense needs a LOT of work.

I am an unabashed admirer of Big Bill both as a player and as an announcer. But the juxtaposition of his pic as an icon with the moniker ironman seems ironic at best. He has had both of his careers shortened due to health reason. Don't know if he can even cycle anymore.

Ben Wallace and Marcus Camby are probably the best comparables for Noel.....

Joakim Noah I think is also a good comparable, perhaps Tyson Chandler as well.....

All tjhough Tyson Chandler might hae LESS offense, lol

Just draft Otto Porter, and your problem is solved!

6-11 and 206 lbs. reminds me of Manute Bol. Or Shawn Bradley. At least half of NBA guards weigh more than 206. Every good forward of center weighs much more. Every strong forward will have an easy time pushing Nerlens out of the way on every play. What is Nerlens going to do? Convert to SG? No. He needs to gain at least 30 lbs. Probably more.

If I'm a Cleveland fan I'm VERY NERVOUS about the prospect of drafting this dude. He has very little offensive game and two knee injuries in 4 years is a lot. Any other draft he'd be going mid round. This must be a very weak draft indeed.

The Cave will be back in the lottery if they pull the trigger on this string bean.

I think the better comparisons are Sam Bowie (for the injuries) and Ben Wallace as a defender. Noel will never have the offensive game Ewing had and will likely just be a paint protector.

Ih Noel's upside is Ben Wallace (or Marcus Camby, or Tyson Chandler, or Joakim Noah), he's definitely not worth consideration as the No. 1 pick.

Anthony Bennett will prove to be the best player from the 2013 draft.

Noel seems like he'll be Samuel Dalembert 2.0. Not sure why that's worth the top pick.

And even if you don't take Bennett first overall, you ag least should go with Ben McLemore or Victor Oladipo. Or even Otto Porter or Trey Burke. Just not Noel.

Pretty much.

And I don't think Noel has a snowball's chance in hell of ever turning into Tyson Chandler.
