Red Wings eying Stephen Weiss

01:08 PM ET 06.17 | If free agent Valtteri Filppula decides to leave the Red Wings this summer, Detroit has a backup plan -- Stephen Weiss. An unrestricted free agent, Weiss is expected to draw interest from several teams this offseason, but the Red Wings should top the list of Filppula leaves. Weiss would be able to center the second line, freeing Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg up to play together on the first line. The Panthers are still working with Weiss on a new contract with the hope that they can lock him up before he hits free agency, but if he makes it to the open market, the Red Wings will be waiting.

"An unrestricted free agent, Weiss is expected to draw interest from several teams this offseason..."

And, we will be sure to get multiple T&R threads about each team interested in signing him. A fine off-season of threads awaits us.

As much attention as any 30 year old 20-goal scorer I guess.

Yeah Detroits recent history suggests every quality free agent wants to play for them.......Detroits will be lucky just to draw the 3rd tier free agents.........no one wants to play on a team that stinks.

Ah, funny as always BGM.

You mean the team that's been to 6 Stanley Cup Finals since '95, won 4 of them for an average of being there every 3 years. Those Wings??

Yep. Either that or, he forgot to ask the Hawks how badly they stink. No matter, the Bruins will have a chance to find out first hand how badly the Wings stink next season. Before you know it, they'll be lobbying Gary to have them moved back to the West because, with them in the East, the Bees will never get another crack at the Stanley Cup. :-)

...and the teams on the down-swing rite now too.......

Yep. That's what everybody kept saying at the beginning of the season: "The Wings are done!" "They'll never make the playoffs!" "No way the Wings can compete without Lidstrom!" Blah! Blah! Blah!

FACT..Detroits last Cup was in the 2007-08 season...thats 5 long years...and the teams on the down-swing rite now too......but yeah..dont let facts get in the way eh.

Oh my god, 5 years ago?? That is ancient. I believe Howe scored a game winner in that series. How many Cups has Boston won in the last 5 years? How many Cups has Chicago won in the last 5 years? Glad ancient history goes back about 3 years for you...helps you remember the olden times.
