Devin Hester's spot with Bears could be in jeopardy

08:40 PM ET 06.17 | Despite his status as one of the best kick returners in NFL history, Devin Hester will have to fight for his roster spot with the Bears when he gets to training camp. Earl Bennett has been returning kicks during minicamps, and Hester's age and salary could contribute towards a potential exit from Chicago. Hester will turn 31 this fall, and makes just under $2 million base salary, and new head coach Marc Trestman declined to say the returner job was Hester's for sure.

Bennett would do a better job anyway.

For Hester's ability to play in all phases of the game (in a pinch), it seems like he'd be worth keeping around at $2 mil.

Of course Trestman's not going to say who the start is... it's only OTAs.

CSN Chicago is digging a little too hard for a story that's not even there yet.

I think most Bear fans would disagree with your assessment that he can play all phases of the game. He was an awful WR.

Agreed. The Devin Hester Experiment was vintage Lovie Smith-Jerry Angelo... and not in a good way.

Someone will pick him up for punt returns, although kick-off returns now are a joke.

Good point... May be why he's not that valuable.

He averaged nearly 26 yards per kickoff return last year. I'm not sure how that's a joke. What concerned me is that he was really indecisive on punt returns last year. What made him so good over the years is the way he read the blocking and then exploded upfield. Didn't see that last year. He was way too tentative.

But he has no value as a WR to this team so unless he is clearly the best option as a special teamer I don't think he makes this team.

Nothing like "job insecurity" to hone a player's focus. Hester has no equal as a kick returner. But the WR experiment has led to a loss of focus and performance. This is a wake up call to Hester. Marc's Mind Games.

The Packers, Vikings, and Lions would appreciate it if Da Bears would do the right thing and just cut Devin Hester.
The NFC Norris Division thanks you.

Mark Trestman? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Da Bears are roaming around in the basement...again
