07:02 AM ET 06.18 | When one thinks of slot receivers, Denver's Wes Welker comes immediately to mind. [Welker] is the quintessential slot receiver, with a dynamic game built on quickness, toughness and guile. The former undrafted free agent has led the NFL in receptions three times. ... [Welker] is undoubtedly responsible for the heightened profile of slot receivers across the league. He has put together a remarkable six-season run of unrivaled productivity as a pass catcher while revolutionizing how offensive coordinators utilize slot receivers in the passing game. However, Victor Cruz has surpassed Welker as the premier slot receiver in the NFL, with a combination of skills that makes him indefensible between the hashes.

When the season is done, revisit this silly comment.

If Peyton Manning-to-Welker isn't the top combo, then it will be Brady-to-Amendola. Cruz will be an also-ran.

Welker could never go up and get the ball like Cruz.... Cruz has always been bettter.

June 18, 2013  08:28 AM ET

Cruz had two good years.. Welk had six. But then look who's getting the ball to them. Eli -- 58% completions. Brady -- 64% completions. Lifetime.

I'm happy with Welker. There isn't any other player I would have rather had the Donks go after. Welker moves chains.

Pats and Broncos. AFC Championship. Book it.

Yep, Vegas isn't even giving even odds on that eventuality.

Amendola is overrated, but he doesn't have much competition, especially with the TEs injured

Too many quality pass catchers in Denver for Welker to get that many balls.

June 18, 2013  09:30 AM ET

Amendola is the great unknown here. He has never totaled even 700 yards in a season or more than 3 TDs. A career under 9 yards per catch receiver so far.

Maybe that changes with Brady and the Pats offensive style, and maybe it doesn't? Maybe he stays on the field for a change. You can bet your last dollar that the Pats would have preferred Welker. Amendola was a distant second choice.

Yes he is. He was the little something on a bad team. That could change, but the Patriots think he could do more obviously. His history is pedestrian.

But....

SANTANA MOSS > victor cruz

Cruz did disappear the last part of the season.

Amendola and Gronkowski , can they stay healthy?

How well will Amendola preform in those Chilly Eastern Winters ?

Having a check down like Welker is something you can't put a price on, he'll get a lot of balls with a QB like Peyton who gives every read a chance.

N.E. will be without their 2 top receivers from last year; Welker and Lloyd, they may not even have Gronkowski for 1 or 2 games to start the season.

For once the running game of N.E. looks stronger than their passing game.

QUOTE(#13):

Perhaps. But teams such as Cincinnati, Houston and Indianapolis will have something to say about that.

You're right, but you left out Kansas City and Baltimore.

The only time N.E. and Denver will probably meet in 2013 is in Foxborough, 11/24/13.

The question is why did the team that knows Amendola the best, the Rams, let him go and give a bigger contract to the guy they replaced him with, Jared Cook. Maybe they just got tired of seeing him on the IR list. Who knows, but it was not about cap space.

Cruz is the better choice over the next five years, but for one game, all on the line, give me Welker....

June 18, 2013  10:55 AM ET

Cruz has some serious skills but lets see if he's able to maximize them over the long haul the way Welker has. 1 great season and one ok season doesn't put Cruz at the top of the list yet.

St. Louis is taking a big gamble in letting both D.Amendola and S. Jackson go in the same year. St. Louis got rid of their 2 most productive offensive players and replaced Amendola with Tavon Austin and Jackson with Isaiah Pead.

He opens up the field alright.
