Red Wings give Pavel Datsyuk 3-year, $23 million extension

02:59 PM ET 06.18 | The Detroit Red Wings fell short of making it the Stanley Cup this year but they made a move to ensure they remain competitive. Detroit and star forward Pavel Datsyuk announced a three-year, $23-million contract extension that keeps the Wings forward in Detroit until at least the 2016-17 season. It's a potentially risky move for the Red Wings as Datsyuk will be 35 this upcoming season and even if he retires the Wings will be on the hook for his salary cap hit for each of the remaining years on his new deal. The same goes for if Datsyuk is injured in the line of duty and has to miss significant portions of a season. The hope is that he'll continue to bring that with this new extension and Red Wings fans have every reason in the world to have faith that he will.

That's more simoleons than I thought the Red Wings would cough up for a player his age.

This is Datsyuk, he's still crazy good even at 35, not surprised Wings extended him.

Glad he signed, not ready to give up watching him play.

Still it's less than what the Pens gave Malkin. I know he's younger, but still...who's the better Russian?

Apparently Bryz isn't getting bought out, Briere is.

Well, they do have two. We'll take Briere...as long as he's looking for around 3.

Congrats to the Grand Rapids Griffins on winning the Calder Cup

Especially for a guy who could have easily won Selke, Byng and Hart.....

You can have your Hosebags, your funny bearded Toews.

The only guy I'd truly compare him to is named Patrice. I guess it's a Franco thing....

Shekels in the bank for Detroit. Best all around player in the league here for 4 more.

Sorry about that. But they made a series of it! Tatar MVP, Mrazek looks like a pretty darn good goalie in the pipe, and other forwards we Wings fans have questioned in the past came up big this postseason. I tell you what, I didn't watch any of the other Griffins games this season but watching tonight...they've got a lot of speed down there.

I listened on WOOD radio, Syracuse (yes I know) small town announcers are the best.
