07:28 AM ET 06.19 | This week sets up as a pivotal one in the for star blue-liner Kris Letang. Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero and agent Kent Hughes, who reps [Letang], are slated to meet here in Boston on Wednesday, a source told ESPN.com. ... The blue-liner has one year left on his deal, but Shero's usual M.O. is not to wait it out. Just look at the Jordan Staal situation a year ago. Once Staal, who had one year left on his deal, rejected a contract extension from the Penguins, and Shero dealt him quickly thereafter. It could be that Shero could get the ball rolling on trade talks if Letang rejects whatever offer might be coming from the Penguins' GM. And know this, I don't think Letang signs for any less than $7 million a year.

Crazy $$ being doled out already this year. Will make Dion and his contract very tradeable (just sayin')

June 19, 2013  08:35 AM ET

They way this guy plays defense, $7M is absurd.

June 19, 2013  08:48 AM ET

Considering Ryan Suter gets 12 Mil, 7 Mil for Tanger is a bargain

I understand "what the market will bear" and all the rest of that nonsense, but when a defenceman like Letang is looking for $7 millions a year, (and may well get it) the system in general, is really screwed up.

It might make his contract seem more palatable but its still Miss Pinch that goes with it.

...when a defenceman like Letang ....

He's a defenceman?

Especially in the playoffs. I thought he was auditioning for Santa Clause with all the giveaways.

Gonch signed and Streit got around 5 Mil a year. I concur.

sorry...he's a 'star blue-liner"

Don't think Streit is signed, yet. Holmgren denied a contract was finalized yesterday.

Everytime I see this guy's name, I think of Graham Chapman saying "Fetang, fetang" when he throws his fake punches.

Oh, I am behind.

Gonch contract still ridiculous, but good for Gonch.

Knowing the absurd numbers and length that was announced, it's a typical Homer no-brainer

The silly party candidate?

QUOTE(#15):

Leafs could be in for Letang if they use Gardiner as bait for a high draft pick/centre. If they could somehow work Dion into that, great. But something to keep an eye on, for sure.

You crack me up.

First Malkin, now Letang. At least you appreciate SOME of the Pens' talent. ;)

Don't hijack this into a PK Norris thread

Suter actually understands what defense is, doesn't turn the puck over on his side of the ice and doesn't lose his cool when it gets nasty. Letang is only interested in improving his one-timer.

LOL - Now he's morphed into PK Norris. Hank will love you. :-)
