05:00 PM ET 06.19 | Veteran linebacker Takeo Spikes, who has been a free agent since the Chargers cut him in March, would like to play this season. But he???s in no hurry to sign with a new team. Spikes said on NFL AM that at age 36, he doesn???t get excited about the idea of sweating through a hot summer practice, and he doesn???t think he needs it. So he???d prefer to sign with some team toward the end of the preseason. ???Do I want to be on a team at the start of training camp? Not really,??? Spikes said. ???After 15 years of playing in the league, they???re not making anything new up. The only thing new you have to understand is terminology, and I would like to think I???ve been around long enough to understand that.???

Hasn't this guy still never been on a playoff team? Pretty impressive considering his job history. Maybe you should be volunteering at a training camp.

Training camp isn't just about learning new plays. It's about building rapport with your fellow teammates, it's about getting your body in shape to handle the grind of a 16 game season, and it's about showing the coaching staff that you've bought into the system.

Spikes doesn't want to do any of that. He just wants a couple more paychecks before his body cashes him out of the game.

Sounds like another "It's just practice" kind of guy.

Ergo, not many of his Linkedin contacts are endorsing his leadership skills.

Agreed. And I doubt any coaches read his statements and thought "boy, that's exactly the kind if guy I'll be looking for at the end of the preseason!" Brilliant move, Spikes.
