06:55 AM ET 06.20 | Veteran punter Chris Kluwe hasn't always made things easy on himself in terms of public relations, and there is some speculation it led to his departure in Minnesota. Mike Priefer didn't want to get too deep into specifics. ... But the Vikings' special teams coordinator said after Wednesday's minicamp practice he felt "very strongly" in writing his postseason evaluation that Kluwe had to go. "It was more consistency and productivity," Priefer said in a response to a question about what factors, statistical or otherwise, contributed to the decision. Asked if Kluwe could have improved his production, Priefer said simply, "I just felt like we needed to make a change there." ... Kluwe, 31, posted a career-best net average of 39.7 yards on 72 punts last season.

If you check his stats, he's somewhere a bit below the middle of the pack in both average and net yards. About the best you can say about his performance is that it's "adequate." Chances are pretty good they can find someone better.

Punting in a dome for at least half his games, he was nothing special. Unless you ask him and his over-inflated ego, of course.

Punters and kickers should be seen and not heard. Since they have such specific and unique tasks to fulfill and are the least reliant of teamwork of any position, they are the easiest positions to replace on short notice. I'm not saying their jobs are easy (by any stretch), but teams can drop somebody new in there quickly and rarely skip a beat.

I believe you Priefer.

"Kluwe, 31, posted a career-best net average of 39.7 yards on 72 punts last season"

But wait, he was good enough for the last few years, but after he has his best statistical year, now he is not good enough? Nothing to do with his stance on social issues?

Maybe Priefer should have said no comment, if he didn't want to give the real reason Kluwe was cut.

June 20, 2013  09:55 AM ET

Yes it is personal, Kluwe and Priefer didn't mix. When a team uses a fifth round pick on a punter they could have had as an undrafted free agent and keep him in the closet until they can "clean" up his technique, they they want you out of there bad....

Career best, but he ranked #22 among NFL punters last year.

Anytime you're below average at a position, it means your coach should be looking for an upgrade.

June 20, 2013  10:17 AM ET

punters are cut and picked up by other teams all the time. Punters have one job and that is kick the ball as close to opponents end zone as possible. Some do it better than others. A good punter also can make a big swing in field position.

There's still a Davis at the top of the Raiders food-chain...

Looks like it's time for the Vikings to check the market for ex-Packer punters.

"Kluwe, 31, posted a career-best net average of 39.7 yards on 72 punts last season"

Ray Guy had a career average of 42.4 yards on 1,049 punts.

And Ray Guy should be in the HOF.

and yet, at the same time, they had no problem bringing him back year after year when he was even worse...he has his best season, supports gay rights and is suddenly out of a job....
