Spartans open to starting true freshman QB

07:13 AM ET 06.20 | He hasn't even taken a snap in college, but the spotlight is already shining on Michigan State incoming freshman quarterback Damion Terry. Mark Dantonio is entering his 10th season as a coach, and during that time, he never has started a true freshman at quarterback. But there's a chance -- albeit a slim one -- that could change entering this season. [Terry] will join a quarterback battle at Michigan State that included senior Andrew Maxwell, sophomore Connor Cook and redshirt freshman Tyler O'Connor in the spring. And while it appears Maxwell is still the safe bet to start when Michigan State hosts Western Michigan on Aug. 30, that doesn't mean Terry has no shot. "We're gonna play the best player," Dantonio said Wednesday.

Just smack between FNers who otherwise like each other. Dearborn Sparty is AWOL, so the Colonel chums the threads for him.

Sorry for the late response, but unlike some of the old geezers (see comments 6 & 7) that frequent these boards, I have to go to work everyday. At any rate, regarding the MSU quarterback situation, please write this down: Maxwell will be the starter (barring injury). Cook will be the back-up and see playing time throughout the year. O'Conner will be third string and will likely see limited playing time in the early part of the season. Terry will redshirt, like nearly all of Dantonio's recruits. There are 67 returning scholarship players at this moment, and only 8 have not redshirtted. Dantonio is never going to publicly say an incoming freshman has no chance to play, but when you read the full interviews, he always coaches true freshman playing with phrases like, "they have to outplay the guys in front of them", "it's very hard to get up to speed as a true freshman", "we like to give our kids a year to grow", etc, etc.
The real story on MSU quartebacks is that Dantonio and his staff have changed how the prepare back-ups. They were dissappointed in how Maxwell played last year, even though he had been in the program three years. They determined that he never got much "live" action. The first step was to make nearly all practices, scrimmages and spring game live. Hitting qb's allowed and encouraged. I expect a limited version of that this summer. The next change will be that the designated back-up will get playing time throughout the year, even if the game is close. They didn't do that for Maxwell, and it showed. They won't make that mistake again.

He will soon have to get up out of bed and go home though, maybe the other guy will at least fix him some breakfast before he has to go.

I like you, old man, but disparaging my beloved is out of bounds. Okay?

I see I misread the comments. I meant comments 5 & 6. I'm sure you are not an old geezer.

Nah, that was Barney Rubble....stole Betty from 0-6 in the 7th grade.

Too bad, too. 0-6, Fred and Barney were inseperable until the girl got in the way. 0-6 had to quit the rock quarry and join the Army to get out of Bedrock...
