Stern might nix Doc-KG trade

04:40 PM ET 06.20 | The trade between the Los Angeles Clippers and Boston Celtics has one notable opponent, and its not someone in either team's front office: it's David Stern, who doesn't believe the deal to bring Doc Rivers and Kevin Garnett to L.A. is legal.

Coaches aren't allowed to be traded, but teams are allowed to compensate others for the right to sign a coach. But what's happening here is complicated because teams aren't allowed to collude on deals with contingencies for further deals to happen. In this situation, the Clippers would be trading for Kevin Garnett, then making a further deal for Doc Rivers' non-compete clause, and if Stern believes the deals are unfairly linked, he might veto them as he vetoed a trade that sent Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Lakers.
