08:45 AM ET 06.21 | The historic Astrodome in Houston was closed four years ago for being deemed unfit for occupancy, but many locals would like to keep the stadium alive due to it's iconic nature. Going even further than that, Harris County Sports & Convention Corp. has proposed a $194 million project to renovate the stadium for use during the 2017 Super Bowl that will be hosted in Reliant Park, the area that includes the Houston Texans home stadium and also the now-defunct Astrodome. Many ideas have been tossed around since closing the facility in 2009, including tearing it down for parking for Reliant Stadium, a park, a retail space for visitors, or a 2012 proposal to turn it into a multi-purpose facility that would have cost roughly $270 million. This new plan, called "The New Dome Experience," may be able to satisfy both sentimental fans and county officials.

I wonder what demolition and clearing of the Dome would cost.

It might not be such a bad idea if that number is close to what it costs to refurb.

Most of what is spouted locally is sentimental "oh, don't tear down the Dome!" and ignores the $$ aspects. Refurb is redonkulously expensive depending on the final outcome's intent, and tear down is also big bucks but just not as big. Can't give you numbers as different sources say different things.

I agree the thing is buttugly just sitting there next to nice new Reliant. Definitely needs power washing.

it has to be much less than the 194 to 270 M quoted to renovate it.

In my lifetime in Pittsburgh, we have lost Forbes Field, Pitt stadium, Three Rivers stadium , and the Civic (Mellon) Arena, each one had its own special place, but time marches on, and economics dictates what goes and what stays....

Latest news is that they are going to split the difference, scale back the project to leave 50% standing, and call it the Half-Astrodome.

LOL!

I say just redecorate the outside, put a big ol' swirly of icing on top, and call it The World's Biggest Cupcake.

I've seen games in all 4 of those but I'm just a little too young to rememeber my visit(s) to Forbes Field. My parents talked about it all the time though.

What has happened to the area where Pitt Stadium stood?
Has UPMC taken that over to?
Seems like they will soon own all of Pittsburgh!

"What I'm hearing which is sort of scary is that they all want to stay in Texas. Everybody is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway so this (chuckle) -- this is working very well for them." ...

You wont. It's pointless.

Been to Reliant a couple times. Great stadium, great atmosphere, great fans (even though I was in Viking gear). I loved climbing up the outside stairs at Reliant to look down at the Astrodome, but it's time to move on. They could use that land for much more than just nostalgia. Heck, been to Texas Stadium a few times (great fans there too, even if I was in Viking gear) and that place had lots more history attached to it, but it was a dump at the end. Had to demolish it, as they should the Astrodome.
