N.C. State coach defends Costner

Coach Sidney Lowe was disappointed to hear talk on the radio that N.C. State is better off without injured sophomore forward Brandon Costner. At the beginning of Lowe's news conference Friday, he gave a calm but stern rebuke to those who are bashing Costner. "We definitely are not better off without Brandon, so that's a stupid question if anyone has ever asked that question," Lowe said. "Brandon is a good basketball player, and when he gets healthy he's going to come back and help us." Costner suffered a rib injury in practice this week that kept him out of a 73-63 defeat of Virginia Tech on Wednesday, the most lopsided of N.C. State's four ACC wins. Lowe said Costner probably won't play today at Maryland. Costner's production has dropped from a team-high average of 16.8 points and 7.3 rebounds last season to 9.4 points and 5.0 rebounds this season.

Come on, Sidney ... that was a weak response!

Sincerely,
