Mavericks 'in game' on Dwight Howard, but likely behind Rockets in chase

02:30 PM ET 06.22 | The Mavericks are going to try and make a run at Dwight Howard this offseason, but they will have some stiff competition for his services. Stealing Howard from the Lakes will be tough enough, but the Mavs are also reportedly behind the Rockets in the chase. ESPN's Marc Stein does feel that Mavs owner Mark Cuban could sway Howard's mind, but it will have to be a great sales pitch considering Dallas' title chances in the next few years. In terms of possibly adding Chris Paul, the Mavs will likely get a sitdown, but adding Paul is even more of a long shot than adding Howard.

The Lakers need to be bold, creative and agressive this offseason. Last season ended on a sour note, with KB, Gasol and Nash injured and Howard wondering about Free Agency.

Half of this is wishfull thinking, but get a load of this: If KB is really intent of making it a good shot to the title, his last one, and handing the franchise over, he'd better plan his way to this. Convince FA that he'll put his money where his mouht is. He and Gasol want to win? Ok, fine, then prove it! Make it work in spite of the odds.
Plan you way into accepting minimum deals with the Lakers in 2014, and sell this plan to Chris Paul, for example, and Dwight, of course.

This is a team sport, the current trend is going small, so sacrifices need to be made in order to get back on top. Kobe has managed to reinvent his game while aging, he needs to do the same for his mentality. The Spurs proved that old and traditional can still win in the right culture. The Lakers need to:
Get Paul to sign for a midlevel deal, or one year.
Tell Kobe and Metta to lose as much weight as possible, to be able to focus on defense. What they both need to instill in this group is a defense first mentality. With Nash and Paul around, creating will never be a problem again.
Make Dwight watch tape and stay out of the gym. He needs to develop his IQ, and that comes with mental preparation and patience.
Get Pau to accept a Ginobili-type role. Modern day basketball is about oportunity and circomstances. If he understands that he can get all he wants in the second quarter of games, and then just focus on team defense and the boards, he'll add 5 years to his career.

1. Paul, Kobe, Clark, Gasol, Howard.
Create mismatches by putting Clark on opposing Pg from time to time, and rest Paul defensively. Sub Gasol with Meeks midway through the first quarter and make the other team run. Screen for Kobe to get open looks, so that the movement also allows Dwight not to get doubled.
Get Nash in to give Paul a breather, along with Metta and Jordan Hill. Nash creating for the second unit would probably make up for the Lakers constant letdowns in the second quarter.

Mix and match the rest of the way, giving Nash minutes at the SG position. he's on of the best ever at shooting. less responsibility means better health int he long run. Same goes for Kobe, Pau and Metta. Accept that you need to let the youth carry the load.

Paul getting 34 mins, Kobe no more than 30, Nash around 24, Clark 24, Metta 24, Meeks 24, Howard 36, Gasol 28, Hill 20.
Let Paul and Nash handle, run screens for Kobe and Dwight, let Meeks spot up on Offense and chase opposing wings on Defense.

Nice fantasy! There's so many things wrong w/ your fantasy. At the beginning of last season, your fantasy was the same w/ the rest of the Lakers fans. Now we finadene out that none of those will ever happen. Fans already hate Dwight. Kobe will always be Kobe. There's no chance for CP3 to accept a mid-level and still the Lakers don't even have the mid-level to sign him. The Lakers will still be old w/ the same cast of players... Once again, they had a chance to follow your fantasy at the start of last season but egos got in the way and certain superstar wasn't willing to give Dwight a chance to prove himself. And don't tell me that the last playoff game should have been enough to show the Lakers and the world. You said it's a team sport but that should have started from day 1...

Maybe if there not in thr running but boy if they could get howard, that wold be scary with howard down low and nowitzki in the mid range game to spread things out a little, they'd be the best big man combo in the game

I think that's the only thing that can make Dwight chose Dallas. You'll have two stars that will look for each other and depend on each other. Dirk is willing to make Dwight top billing and the main superstar. He won't be the #1 guy in Houston because they have Harden who would want to be the #1 guy.
