09:57 AM ET 06.23 | Washington Redskins franchise icon Joe Theismann is weighing in on the matter, and he has a very different take from most. The Super Bow XVII champion was recently in South Dakota for a youth clinic, where he was interviewed by The Argus Leader. Theismann was asked about the controversy surrounding his old team, and the 12-year Redskin responded with a story he said occurred that very morning. "I can tell you that when I was at the children's hospital this morning, there was a young Native American boy there with his parents," Theismann said. "His grandmother wanted a picture with me, and his father took the picture. And as I shook his hand the father said to me 'You're a Redskin,' and he said it in a very complimentary way, which was very humbling to me. What happens, what Mr. Snyder decides to do is totally up to him. I can just tell you that when I put that uniform on, and I put that helmet on with the Redskin logo on it, I felt like I was representing more than the Washington Redskins. I was representing the great Native American nations that exist in this country."

Better To Say Nothing, Bro.

The vocal natives say the name is offensive.

Saying somebody, 40 years ago, was not offended by the moniker is akin to saying some of my friends are Indians.

Insert another adjective in the following sentence and see if the NFL stands by it.

"I wish them darn redskins would stay out of our town"

Pointless, move on. Politicians jump on the bandwagon for one reason only, votes. Too many professional complainers in the world.

Perhaps the Washington Warriors?

Yet they complain about the Atlanta "Braves" and the Cleveland "Indians". I'm sure Native Americans were in the area now called Cleveland at some point. Speaking of points, it seems that Native Americans don't want whitey using "anything" that reflects their heritage. While I agree with them regarding the name Redskin, like anything else people want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. I'm sure I'll get smacked around for my stance. I'm a big boy, I can take it. It is a sensitive area.

Way to twist it and blow way out of context.. (1) it happened recently; (2) It was said in a complimentary way, which is significantly more than "not offended". Obviously there are some vocal native americans that don't like the name. What portion of the NA population is offended? Get some hard numbers rather than this anecdotal bs.

Some of my " best" friends have red skin in the summer, I will ask them how they feel about it.

That's an incredibly convenient anecdotal story.

If a 12 year old thinks bank robbers are cool should we stop arresting them?

I don't need hard numbers, it is a racially descriptive and derogatory slang term. It wouldn't be acceptable with other races.

Joe's comment made me want to vomit in my own mouth. Complete and utter bul(lsh)it. He should be embarrassed for saying such a contrived thing.

Yeah, I kinda choked on my coffee reading that whopper. Joe's in the wrong business. Dems and Repubs need all the BS artists they can get.
