07:08 AM ET 06.24 | Finally, it's done -- the on-again, off-again deal that had Boston sports radio talking for the better part of a week. Talks started again on Sunday when the Clippers offered the Celtics the first-round pick to free [Doc Rivers] from his contract with Boston, sources said. ... The Clippers and Rivers believe Rivers' arrival will solidify star free agent Chris Paul's commitment to sign a five-year contract extension in July, sources said. Rivers told the Clippers that he was no longer interested in the position on Friday, but pressure from Paul stayed strong on Clippers management over the weekend and Los Angeles reconsidered its unwillingness to give Boston a first-round pick, sources said.

Doc is a great coach...........He wanted to leave before he punched out Rondo..................

He will do great things with the Clippers............

And help turn Blake into a complete player...

This is great for both franchises. Clippers get a great coach and for Boston there's no need to keep a 21 millon dollar coach as you rebuild.

As long as LeBron has his talents in South Beach, everyone else is a runner-up. Boston can rebuild, make trades, sign free agents...but it makes no difference. LeBron plays for the Miami Heat and has a supporting cast. Until that changes, no other team in the Eastern Conference is going to the NBA Finals.
Doc, take Sterling's money;go on...take it!

And now - Ainge can start the rebuilding unencumbered. Trade KG, let PP go and move on.

I disagree. After 2 7 game series and almost losing in 6 games, it's really hard to say that the Heat is a lock to win it all next year. That Ray Allen shot saved the King. He needs to start being humble or else the basketball gods will take away his luck...

It won't matter. I've said it before; DelNegro isn't the reason the Clippers watched the playoffs on TV. No coach is any better than his roster. Enjoy the weather Doc.

Please, Hllywd. VDN is an average coach...at best.

You know what, you are right.....BUTIts a bad precedence that coaches 1- have an easy out without any consequences while under contract- 2- it seems like a way around the rules with picks being given as compensation

What rules?? Boston simply chose not to pay $21 million over the next 3 years. No rules were broken here.

You can't trade a coach. He got traded for a first round pick.

Well, the Heat are 3 for 3 in the LeBron Era and no one sees that changing anytime soon. You can hope, pray, and keep your fingers crossed all you want.
No one said the Heat are a lock to win the Finals...they're just a lock to win the Eastern Conference in 2014..and 2015.
Reality bites, huh? At least the Celtics management made sure Boston won't be involved in any NBA Title in the near future.

Boston didn't have to make the deal, and Rivers didn't have to agree to it.

But he did and they got a first round pick. If they didn't get anything for him then it would have been okay. So basically there was a trade involved.

June 24, 2013  08:45 AM ET

Trading a coach is just stupid. It's almost as if the organization is saying "oops, our bad". I don't see how you can get a player in return for a coach though. Seems stupid to me.

Wrong. He got released from his contract and the Celtics were compensated a 1st round pick.

June 24, 2013  08:50 AM ET

This is really no different than players deciding where they want to go to form "super teams."

Basically the same thing. Does that mean that all coaches who will get release before their contract ends will get a compensatory first round pick from the team the new coach will sign with?
