07:12 AM ET 06.24 | One of baseball's best pitchers may not have the chance to pitch in the upcoming Midsummer Classic. Manager Jim Leyland confirmed early Sunday that [Justin Verlander] is tentatively scheduled to make his final start before the break July 14, just two days before the All-Star Game in New York. By rule, pitchers who start on the Sunday before the All-Star Game aren't eligible to pitch in Tuesday's Midsummer Classic, according to Leyland. "(Sunday starters) can't pitch," Leyland said. "The guy Saturday can pitch an inning -- probably an inning -- but the guy Sunday couldn't pitch." His comments differ from a widespread belief that pitchers who start on the Sunday before the Midsummer Classic aren't automatically disqualified.

That's bad news for the NL.

He doesn't deserve to pitch in the 2013 All-Star Game, anyhow. This guy has been a mess since he lost Kate Upton. I guess money can't buy everything.

Why would he be picked in the first place? I have long since tired "names" making the All Star Game instead of those who earn it.

He will be fine. Slumps happen. You wish you had his problems. He easily should have 10 wins if they could close anything.

The rule: "Pitchers who start on the Sunday before the game break will be replaced on the roster, but will still be recognized as All-Stars."

Leyland gets to pick some players. that is why he will be on the roster if not voted in.

OK, but his 3.90 ERA and more hits than innings pitched are what they are....His last five wins his team scored 6 or more runs each time. I suppose he could just as easily have 10 losses too.

Verlander has a 3.90 era, a 1.38 whip, and is averaging 6 innings per start. An 8-5 record is generous.

He has a 3.90 ERA, why the heck would he even be selected to pitch in the ASG. That would be aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabsurd. His command is really bad right now, he could use the break to get away from the game for a week.

Fans only vote for the everyday players, the DH and the "last vote" thing they started a few years ago. Leyland would be nuts to take Verlander for a couple reasons. He's led the majors in innings pitched in 2012 and 2011 (regular season) and when you include the playoffs he threw 264 innings in 2012 and 271 in 2011. Leyland knows Verlander needs time off to regroup and rest if they are to have any chance at a legit run at a WS ring. Also, if JL is going to take a Tigers pitcher it's going to be Max Scherzer, 3.05 ERA, 0.91 WHIP (2nd in AL) and 122 K's (2nd in AL). Add to that he's 11-0.

So GM wanta be's. Would you panic, bench, or trade him? Doubt it. I imagine you would do just what the Tigers are doing. Nothing, and hope like any Tigers fan it'll work itself out.

He needs to start throwing strikes. He gets behind int he count and they sit on the heater and belt it. Before he could mix in the change and curve and keep them off balance. Batters have learned not to swing at balls outside the strike zone which he throws a lot.

What? Does this have something to do with who starts the All Star game?

Verlander doesn't have the right stuff lately,, and because of all this?is better to skip the ASG:-) :-)

50yearfan, the fans don't get the chance to vote for ASG pitchers. But who is on the roster in terms of pitchers and in terms of those not voted onto the rosters, are not determined solely by the ASG manager. They are chosen with the advice of the rest of the managers in the league, and with input from of the commissioner's office. Favoritism doesn't play nearly a big a part as you want to believe. Verlander is having a sub-par year, for him, and there are other pitchers in the AL who will be more than suitable for the task, and who will not have started on Sunday.
