07:07 AM ET 06.25 | Mr. Smith goes to -- where, exactly? J.R. Smith will officially inform the Knicks on Tuesday of his plans to file for free agency. The Sixth Man of the Year will not exercise the clause in his contract to "opt in" to the final year of his deal that would pay him $2.9 million. It is just a formality since it has been known for months that Smith, coming off his best NBA season, intended to become a free agent on July 1st. "J.R's a special player," Carmelo Anthony said last month. "To me and to everybody on this team he made a huge step forward as a basketball player and we look forward to that. For him to come out, win the Sixth Man of the Year award, helping us to win a division title, helping us to win 50-plus games, he was a big part to this team."

Any team that signs him needs to add a no-drinking clause in his contract.

*actually I think we are limited cause we have only his EARLY bird rightsSo the max we can offer is 5 mil per and Max 4 years.....With some pay increases it would come to about 21-22 mil for 4I have to believe that some team will come along and offer more

I think a team will offer 7-8 million a season.

Not true....thank goodnessWe are limited cause of the cap

But they have his bird rights. They can pay him the max if they want to. I think they'll give him between $5-8 million per year. It would have been better if he didn't opt out.

This is so typical of Brick fans. You would never have been a threat without JR.
