Rays stuck at the Trop until 2027

07:10 AM ET 06.25 | The Rays certainly have done their part, regularly posting winning seasons, and yet theirs is the lowest average attendance in the American League. That is the dilemma facing principal owner Stuart Sternberg, who granted FOXSports.com an exclusive, wide-ranging interview. ... FS: What would it take to break the lease? SS: The specifics of it, I can't and wouldn't get into. There's no real breaking of the lease. It's there. It's a lease. We're there. We have to play our games there until 2027. After that, we don't have to play our games there. If I walked in and said, 'Here's $12 billion. Can you let us out of the lease?' I think they'll probably say OK. If I say, 'Here's a dollar. I want to leave in five years,' they're probably not going to say OK. By the same token, when you leave, you have to have a place to go.

I'm sure they'll be able to negotiate some sort of a buyout before the end of the lease in 2027.

BTW: The Rays ended the Jays 11 game winning streak with back to back to back home runs in the 2nd inning, including Wil Myers first.

Don't blame Tampa Rex. It's the city of St. Pete that controls the lease.

As Sternberg, said " you have to have a place to go."

Maybe they'll have it figured out before then.

St. Pete is a retirement area. The team might do much better in Tampa. Let them move across the Bay.

St. Pete has a pretty trendy nightlife that draws a lot of young people.

Have you been to downtown St. Pete in the last 15 years? It's no retirement area. It's very cool. But the end of a peninsula is a terrible location for a stadium.

Yes it does. St. Pete was a retirement community 30 years ago. Not today.

Dome stadiums just plain suck. They suck for baseball, they suck for concerts. Ditch The Dome should be the new catch phrase in Tampa.

Preferably a retractable one, minus the gawdiness of the one in Miami.

It was his first at the Trop. Dead center - I think they said it went 422, and it got there in a hurry.
