03:01 PM ET 06.25 | A few weeks ago it was rumored that the Philadelphia Flyers were thinking about buying out netminder Ilya Bryzgalov and today those rumors became truth. Despite his agent denying that it would happen, the Flyers have bought out the contract of Ilya Bryzgalov making him a free agent this offseason and freeing up even more space under the salary cap to bring Mark Streit onto the team. Ilya Bryzgalov is in the middle of a massive contract that the Flyers tried to justify to themselves but ultimately couldn't. Had he lived up to expectations, the Flyers wouldn't have had such a problem paying Ilya Bryzgalov his $51 million contract over nine years.

Now the Flyers just need to buy out Holmgren's contract.

QUOTE(#5):

I am. But I also have been a Flyers fan long enough to know he's not pulling all the strings. The whole Bryz fiasco has been the Flyers m.o. LONG before Homer took over as GM. That call came from a higher pay grade. Losing out on Parise and Suter was out of his control. And with the cap, they can no longer go out and buy whatever they want/need along with the Rangers.I'm not saying sign the man up for a lifetime contract, but give him a fair shake, lets see where things stand at the end of next season.

This is true. It's difficult to say what percentage of the deals are Holmgren's or Snider's or even how much Clarke influence is still in effect

I used to wonder that about Sather too. How can the guy be so smart (relatively speaking) at trade deadline time and be a bit of a jerk at FA signing time?

Just gonna copy and paste this from the other thread:Speaking of lunatics. Bryz will get paid 39.5 mil for playing 2 years with the Flyers, and be paid through 2027. So is the lunatic the GM, or the person who is keepign the GM employed.Trades Carter and Richards for cap space, they win a cup, the cap space is used to sign Bryz, then buy out Bryz two years later. Trade JVR for Schenn, trade a first and third for Versteeg, Bob for some picks.Who besides for Sather could stay employed with just the last 2 years looking like that?

ok, Danny.....now you're just rubbing it in

I can't even tell if you're a Flyers fan or not because it seems every Flyers fan around here wants Homer's head.

It'll be interesting after Snider is gone to hear if his final years he has been Al Davis-like in his approach. Making desperate moves that continue to move the organization further and further behind.

I like Homer just fine, right where he is. ;-)
