06:24 PM ET 06.25 | The Dallas Cowboys have broken off negotiations with franchise-tagged defensive end Anthony Spencer, agent Jordan Woy tells 105.3 The Fan in an exclusive interview on Tuesday, making it ???most likely that he???ll play 2013 on the one-year deal.?????? The parties hit what sources called a ???downturn?????? in talks in early July, the problem being the club believes recent NFL deals have shoved the market value of comparable players down to the $5-million-a-year range.Meanwhile, the Spencer camp wanted the recent five-year, $66-million extension given to Packers linebacker Clay Matthews to be part of the conversation. Or, at least, the $8-million-a-year deal Cleveland gave pass-rushing linebacker Paul Kruger to lure him from Baltimore. ???Both sides have worked really hard to reach a deal,?????? Woy says. ???But at this point I would say it???s most likely that he???ll play 2013 on the one-year deal.??????

All the money went to Romo Anthony. None left for you.

Look, you do not spend $10.6 million to tag a guy, that money is all guaranteed, and then tell him he is really only worth $5 million. Unless? you have no idea what you are doing in the front office.

Good point. He probably doesn't even remember all that $10.6 million nonsense.

And you all thought Jerry is senile. At least he's not senile enough spend 8 - 10 million on a mediocre defensive end.

June 25, 2013  07:48 PM ET

Maybe OBD can decipher it for us.

He was the only player in the NFL with 90+ tackles and 10+ sacks last season. I know zip about the guy other than that, having seen very few Cowboys games the last few years, but that doesn't sound mediocre. On paper. I take it there's a lot of downside, too?

Wow! The radio host is forward-thing, isn't he? Progressive, even. All before the month of July. No wonder Spencer isn't getting the big payday he wants.

The team may be trying to save money for JJ's senility faciity.

His solo's have been steady the last four years. (Hovered around the low to mid 50's)Asst were way up last year and his sacks were near double. The inside of the line is where the improvement came from. It's all relative, Spencer is average and with a fat new long term deal, I doubt he would even be average.

JJ never saw a bad deal he didn't like.

Agreed. Dallas is always teetering at or above the salary cap because they sign average senior citizens (Spencer is 30) to long term deals AFTER the player finally has a career season, a career season that just so happens to occur prior to a contract year. And let's face the facts, Spencer is no Clay Mathews. And speaking of Mathews, Dallas could have drafted Clay in the 09 draft ... if they hadn't traded away their 1st, 3rd and 6th round picks to Detroit for Roy Williams that year.

no... he's not senile LMAO!! JJ spends $18-$20M/yr on very average QB. pay romo same money brady or manning gets, but romo has a 1-6 elimination game record. yep, we are in good hands w/ JJ making decisions. that's why we have one playoff win in last 15 yrs!!
