NHL nixes Lightning/Leafs buyout deal for Lecavalier

02:43 PM ET 06.26 | The Tampa Bay Lightning want to get out from Vincent Lecavalier's contract, but still want him to play for the team. Their solution? Trade him, let the other team use a compliance buyout to make him a free agent then re-sign him to a more manageable contract. It sounds great, except the NHL won't let it happen. The loophole in the CBA that would allow for such a deal is being closed by the league, which won't register a contract if a deal like that is done. So the Lightning's plan to send Lecavalier to the Maple Leafs along with an asset, let Toronto buy him out and then re-sign him? Yeah, that's done.

Why, Steve Y?

Already the owners and players are trying to subvert the CBA. Didn't take 'em long.

This is the most REDICULOUS thing that i've ever read...as if the Leafs would do such a favor for any club.

They've done Boston quite a few favors in the last few years ;)

Didn't take em long is right. It started back in Febuary when Boston traded to Thomas to the Islanders. If that's not cheating the system nothing does.

The Leafs would still end up losers in this deal somehow

Can the Lightning buy out Vinnie and then resign him as a FA?
