Isles admitting failure

07:37 AM ET 07.01 | Swapping a former No. 5 overall pick, Nino Niederreiter, to the Wild for what amounts to a grinding forward, Cal Clutterbuck, sends a message. [The decision by the Islanders] might meet some needs, but it also speaks to a grand failure to either identify young talent properly prior to a draft or develop it properly so that it becomes a useful asset post-draft. ... [Maybe] Niederreiter is a lost cause, and maybe the gritty Clutterbuck helps take the emerging Isles another step forward. But either way, it's an admission of failure. Isles GM Garth Snow would not say whether there'd been a breakdown of the relationship between the player and the team, but he did say if there was it was not on the team's side, which is more than a bit convenient.

NHLN keep reporting on the scroll yesterday that the Isles had traded Clutterbuck to the Wild.

Talk about failure!

July 1, 2013  08:31 AM ET

Nino has a huge upside but he's developed into a little bit of a cancer the past few seasons. He was vocal about wanting to play top 6 minutes on the Isles when he never earned an ounce of ice time that would warrant top 6 miuntes. He was put on the 4th line for 55 games to earn his keep. He scored 1 goal, moped and then was told he would spend an entire season in the AHL to develop more. Then his agent spoke out and stated that they were demanding a trade.

I'm sorry, but I don't see this as an Isles failure as much as I see a bratty 20s-something hockey player trying to whine his way on the ice. The Isles are a changing team and I'll take the grit and heart of a player like Clutterbuck any day over Nino. Good riddance!

a growing and rather disturbing trend, which I think is also rooted in "The Self Esteem Generation". It seems to me if you want to play more, you should make it so the coach can't take you off the ice

Hardly an indictment of the NYI organization. The draft is a crapshoot, even at #5. Every team has their share of Draft mulligans

He gave Garth every reason in the world to trade him. This guy is a dud. The Wild will see. It's a shame they have to shed a payroll like Clutterbuck because of two $90M 'studs'

"Isles admitting failure"

Yep. It starts at the top. Doesn't it?

If Nino matures up and is great, then it's a steal for the Wild. If he continues to be a me first person, then the Isles make out by getting him off their team.

Jeff Skinner went two picks later...

Brendan Gallagher went 142 picks later...:-)

Agreed. Some players work hard and some players hardly work. Nino is relying too much on what he's already done instead of what he needs to do to get to the NHL level.

Interested to see if he makes the team in MN.

Garth Snow, you did it again, (snort)

Hopefully this is a win win for both teams. The isles fanbase will certainly love Clutter. If for nothing else his hustle and peskiness. Dont know a thing about El Nino. Hope he applies a new attitude and understands he has to work to play (on any club).

Clutterbuck reunited with his OHL running mate, Johnny T.

NYI is definitely on the right track, they just need a G.

Yup.

I wanted the Isles to hold on to him for another year and then trade him if his attitude/play didn't improve. But, that is a risk to b/c if he stunk then his value would plummet.

He played really well at the worlds. So, I thought he earned another shot.

Clarify, what else has he done?

He thought he grabbed a top goaltender out from under the Wings, not old enough to remember? :)

I'm sure glad to see him gone from the Western Conference.

Oops! The Wings are no longer in the Western Conference. Darn it!
