Bush may be forced to talk

Reggie Bush has faced continual accusations since April 2006 that he and his family took as much as $300,000 in cash and goods while he attended the USC. Since then, Bush and his family have refused to cooperate with investigators for the NCAA and the Pacific-10 Conference, who are looking into whether he or university officials violated rules governing student-athletes. Bush has said little beyond denying any wrongdoing. This month, however, Bush may be forced to break his silence. A lawyer for his chief accuser, Lloyd Lake, said he issued a subpoena to compel Bush to give a deposition Feb. 25 in a lawsuit filed in San Diego last October. Lake contends that the Bush family accepted cash, a car, rent-free housing and other goods from him, and he is seeking repayment.

Bush better hope he understands what "perjury" means. His refusal to talk to the NCAA/PAC 10 speaks volumes to his guilt. Also include the fact he "settled" with Lake's partner also fingers his guilt. Why settle with a guy if you did nothing wrong?

ANd as for USC. They knew what was going on and if they didn't it still tells you that they purposely turned a blind eye to the shadiness of their program.

I just hope USC gets slammed hard and a world of hurt comes down on them just like what happened with UM.

Like he would answer any question honestly.

"I can't recall." next question... "I don't remember anything about that." next question, "Um, I don't recall."

Get the picture?

Awww, C'mon fellas, this guy is as innocent as OJ and Robert Blake COMBINED! And how could his coaches have possibly noticed that the best running back to come through that school since Marcus Allen was suddenly driving around in a nice new car and that his family's address had suddenly changed to a MUCH more upscale neighborhood! Bunch of USC haters!

February 10, 2008  12:13 PM ET

Bush may have taken some "gifts" throughout his stay at SC, I wouldn't doubt it at all to be honest w/ you, but I don't think the NCAA will bring anything down on the school. Now, if Bush decides to come completely clean and spill the whole sordid story then maybe Pete and the boys may have some penalties levied against them then.......we'll see.
But until then, FIGHT ON

February 10, 2008  12:59 PM ET

USC DEATH PENALTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

February 10, 2008  01:05 PM ET

The NCAA has to act on the evidence - if it comes to light,
Otherwise they lose all credibility and in effect tell the other schools not to self-report but deny.

February 10, 2008  01:17 PM ET

USC cannot, and will not be penalized. Rightly so. This guy is not tied to the University or it's Boosters. This has already been proven.

The Heisman Committee might ask for their trophy back.
But other than a little character humiliation, and perhaps paying out some money - not much will come of this. I simply hope they choose to pursue him for the principle.

February 10, 2008  01:29 PM ET

If it was any other school, I could see sanctions. But for SC, they won't want to discredit a team that has won a championship this decade.

February 10, 2008  02:04 PM ET

uhhh,

They hit Alabama hard for a dude taking 4 hundred dollars from am agent. Then that set up the repeat offenede status and they killed them, It will be interesting to see how even handed the treatmentthe NCAA ****'s will be when it comes to USC.

February 10, 2008  02:36 PM ET

The key to whether or not USC gets penalized is whether or not they knew, or rather that it is proven that they knew. If they knew, they should and probably will get penalized. There is also a relatively new criteria (used in the Michigan B-ball case), i.e. that a coach/program/department SHOULD have known.

And LSUBest, I wonder why you think the NCAA has any credibility.

February 10, 2008  03:16 PM ET

Rosewood,

a little info for you....the NCAA holds schools responsible for things THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE KNOWN. When your star athlete dumps his old truck for a tricked out Impala, starts partying with cash he didn't have before and the school asks nothing about will be a big issue the NCAA will hold USC accountable for.

But, the NCAA can only hope they get enough evidence to nail Bush and USC.

February 10, 2008  05:30 PM ET

about time his feet are being held to the fire. yet to hear a plausible reason from the bush camp of how the house/car/etc were financed.

would also be nice if a 'name' school finally is punished by the nc2a to the same extent the rest of the schools are but expect them to keep having different sets of rules for different schools. not holding my breath. kansas gets a slap on the wrist for admitted widespread academic fraud. at most usc loses a couple of scholarships

February 10, 2008  06:09 PM ET

USC knew all along...But speculation and hearsay doesn't stand up in court...Unless it can be proven that USC knew and did little to investigate from an 'Institutional Control" standpoint?...It's gonna take a lot more than allowing agents to attend practices(and such) to place direct blame on the University...

The only person that can prove USC's complicity is Reggie himself...And if the answers to the questions he is asked don't implicate USC in any wrongdoing?...It will be virtually impossible to make anything "stick"...At the worst?...He could be ruled as an ineligible player and USC will have to forfeit some games...Reggie doesn't have anything to gain from biting the hand of the program that "fed him"...

As for T.V.---Bowl---Scholarship limitations?...Are you kidding me?...USC is one of the biggest marketed college football programs out there...Do you really think that the NCAA has the backbone to cripple one of its biggest money-makers?...

My Magic 8-Ball reads..."Highly doubtful"...

February 10, 2008  07:19 PM ET

Can you say, "Lack of Institutional control?" Remember, we are talking about the NCAA. The same NCAA that reprimanded Notre Dame though it the Irish technically did not violate NCAA rule (they found a loop-hole). They do not require nearly as much proof as in a court of law.

February 10, 2008  07:44 PM ET

For the love of god! What is the statute of limitations on this?

Whatever the outcome between Lake and Bush, it will have no bearing on the Heisman, nor will they make USC vacate games, let alone a championship. The NCAA doesn't have the skins to rewrite history anymore.

February 10, 2008  07:48 PM ET

Guilty. Next..And let me ask the appologists why Reggie is entitled? What is wrong with this Country? Morals, people. So, so, simple. All Reggie had to do was pay these guys back and he'd be avoiding all this. They are asking for nothing other than what they gave him. They lost, perhaps, millions in future gains. Where does he come from?? Anyone who calls me a "hater" is correct, but it has nothing to do with Reggie Bush. I hate people who can't fathom that the rules apply to them, to everyone of us.

February 10, 2008  10:05 PM ET

Lake rhymes with snake. Didn't he do something illegal?

February 10, 2008  10:16 PM ET

I would take the 5th and not say a word

February 10, 2008  11:18 PM ET

Warden,

Last check, Bush is not a student at USC.
Which leaves the NCAA looking only for ties to the program.
Which there are none. Bush got away with cheating. It stinks.
But it's over.

February 10, 2008  11:24 PM ET

This shows reggie bush only cares about money and being a celebrity thats why he's never going to be anything more than an average player in the NFL and that HEISMAN he's holding belongs to vince young.
