At least four teams after explosive, flaky Smith

07:03 AM ET 07.02 | The J.R. Smith sweepstakes are underway, and his most recent team may not have enough to bring him back. According to a person who spoke to Smith, the explosive but flaky shooting guard believes he will get an offer that will top the Knicks' maximum bid -- starting at $5.4 million -- under early-Bird-rights bylaws. The Sixth Man Award winner who flopped in the playoffs then must decide if he wants to take a little less to stay in his hometown and perhaps play alongside his brother. ... The Knicks believe odds are they will retain J.R. Smith, but it hardly is a guarantee considering the bevy of under-the-cap clubs and a weak free-agent class. The Bucks, Pistons and Suns are contemplating throwing money Smith's way.

Can you imagine if those teams offer less?

This tells you the state of the SG position in the NBA but I can't knock those teams they need help and even Smith is an improvement.

Bucks: They are ok letting Ellis walk for his asking price is jut too big to bite. Smith, Mayo can be had for cheaper. They also appear to be letting Redick walk for nothing which is sort of surprising

Pistons: Need help in the SG position badly again sort of desperate

Suns: Are below average at multiple positions and could use a go to player at SG

Don't worry Knick Fans, you have a bigger flake July 10. Softer than overcooked pasta.

QUOTE(#10):

I love JR. His talent is off the chain. But I've also lived long enough to know that once you become a liquor slave there's no turning around. Vin Baker is prime example. For a team like Knicks with championship aspirations taking these kinds of risks is not the way to go.

Right thing to do will be to let JR go... there will be good character guys that can be had for cheap.

A championship is a long journey - not a thrill ride like the Clippers!

Some GM's out there will make

The rest of it missed the board like a JR Smith 3 pointer?

JR should be let go. Last season was the one season he couldn't do anything wrong. He really tried hard to a team players and do away with the night life. Yet he gets drunk during playoffs and always played drunk or looked drunk... if I'm an owner he's definitely not worth the investment... Let him go Dolan!

I mean he tried hard to be a team team player and a proffessional... I mean last season was the one season he had to do everything right to get a contract that correlates to his talent... yet what did he do?.... the guy is an alcholic. He doesn't deserve to be in the NBA.

Smith is just a natural fit with the Knicks. Somehow that uniform looks appropriate on Smith :-)
