Wings UFA and buyout targets

07:20 AM ET 07.02 | Buckle your seat belts, Detroit -- the next few days may offer a bumpy ride, and it may not include expensive Vincent Lecavalier. But, there are players who should fall into the Red Wings plans -- Panthers center Stephen Weiss, Blackhawks left wing Viktor Stalberg, Bruins right wing Nathan Horton, Devils right wing David Clarkson and Canadiens right wing Michael Ryder, to name a few. ... But there are internal issues the Red Wings must deal with, too. For example, the logjam at the forward spot. Valtteri Filppula, Daniel Cleary and Damien Brunner are unrestricted free agents, and join restricted free agents Joakim Andersson and Gustav Nyquist in the mix of forwards. So, using one, or both, of the compliance buyouts that will help teams get to the $64 million salary cap is the path the Red Wings could take.

Sounds like DET is, like many teams, going to struggle with the Cap this offseason.

Smart move by any GM is to stay on the sidelines for the first couple of days, let the Vinny C's and the Clarkson get their overpaid, bloated contracts, then sweep in and sign targeted players for reasonable $$ once the other fools are tapped out.

Forget about Vinnie! Can't afford him. Horton will be asking for the moon and somebody will give it to him. And, everyone knows how much the Wings like their Swedes. So .... Viktor Stalberg to Detroit.

I let him use my stuff every now and then.

A word of advice for Detroit though, stay away from Ryder, far away....

July 2, 2013  09:30 AM ET

I don't see Ryder as a fit... gotta at least TRY to play some defense.

You need to find a more obscure book than "Lord Of The Flies", Hank.

The mods probably look to that book as their bible.
