Best defensive player ever, or just for now?

07:08 AM ET 07.03 | Teammate Brian Cushing recently said J.J. Watt could be the best defensive player ever, which may be premature. First, no player two years into his NFL career should be in "best ever" discussions. But Cushing said "could," so we will consider the topic. It will be difficult for Watt, a defensive tackle who is listed as a defensive end in the Texans??? 3-4 front, to surpass Lawrence Taylor. The former New York Giant was not only dominant, he changed the game to where outside linebackers became elite rushers. Trend-setters get extra credit in every "best ever" debate. But I will say Watt is unquestionably the best defensive player in the game today. ... The NFL Network poll of players ranked Watt No. 5 overall -- and the top defensive player.

How bout Sapp ?

He could bring some water to LT and a towel to Deacon.

Third--- Mickey Dolenz.
Fourth--- Peter Tork.

Word, but I would still put him ahead of JJ. He hasn't done it long enough.

I'm cool with this...

Because there is NO question about #1!

The list is in the hundreds - if we revisit the subject in 5 years it might be down to dozens. JJ has potential to join the conversation with another 12 years like the 2 he has had.

Cushing is just screaming "Test Me".

July 3, 2013  09:03 AM ET

He's an outstanding player; I just can't say he's the best ever. That's silly at this point.

July 3, 2013  09:12 AM ET

How about "just for this season", maybe.

July 3, 2013  09:20 AM ET

This is EXACTLY why NFLN's Top 100 list is so inane.

I'm a Texan fan; Watt had a great year; but best ever talk...come on!

O.D. I agree, but I would put Deacon ahead of LT, but just by a "head slap"!!!! :-)

This topic should not have made it past the editors desk. YOUR FIRED.

So, you can't say anyone "could" be the greatest, without bringing everybody out of the woodwork. Not any inaccuracy in Cushing's statement with that word in it, people.
