Should Giants trade Shockey?

As the Giants transition into building their team for 2008 and a potential Super Bowl repeat, they are faced with an unusual question: Does Jeremy Shockey still have a place on the club? Some, such as former backup quarterback Tim Hasselbeck, believe the Giants' late-season success was due in part to Shockey being eliminated from the mix, thus allowing quarterback Eli Manning to thrive. General manager Jerry Reese insisted otherwise in the days leading up to the Super Bowl, saying the Giants would have enjoyed the same dramatic rise with Shockey. He called it a coincidence that the team's surge came after Shockey got hurt. Soon enough, it will be learned whether Reese really means it.

Miami needs a tight end. He went to college there.

I agree with burgandy, he seems like a smart guy:)

February 10, 2008  08:29 AM ET

i agree with burgandy, he seems like a smart guy, except for what he thinks of brady, but that's another issue...:)

February 10, 2008  08:33 AM ET

Bress could use a reliable tight end.

February 10, 2008  08:34 AM ET

oops...i meant to only post the second one...

Reese is a very bright man. He knows the team is better with Shockey, both running and passing the ball. The guy is signed through 2011. He is not going anywhere unless another team is willing to give up a lot. Boss did great, but he is no Shockey. Manning has the trump card between the two of them, so that is that. Shockey is all about winning, that is all he wants..He is going no where..

February 10, 2008  08:53 AM ET

No brainer... YES for many many reasons

February 10, 2008  09:10 AM ET

Let's see... he elects to sit in a sky box, getting his drink on during the super bowl instead of being on the sideline with his team. He then choses to skip the victory parade celebrating the Giants' win. I don't care how good a player is if they are this selfish and immature. The Giants were able to go on a winning streak AND win the Super Bowl without "Mr. Me-first Shockey". Why would they want to keep a guy like this on their team??

February 10, 2008  09:12 AM ET

Not a Surprise that with the two biggest ego's out of the way the Giants came together and won as a TEAM
for all his talent Shockey is a disruptive force in the huddle..arm waving head shaking in disgust if hes not thrown to all the time.
If they can trade him great if not he need to tone down is BS and play like the rest of the TEAM.

Why would they want to keep a guy like this on their team??
Because they are a better team on the field with him...He is a much better blocker for the run, and a better receiver..
You might no invite him to dinner, but you sure would invite him in to the huddle. He plays hard, always gives 100% on the field. You do not have to like him if you so choose, but give him that. He is a warrior..

Brian Baldinger summed it up well on NFL Network a few weeks back. He showed that a fair amount of Eli Manning's interceptions were when he was blitzed. However, the ints happened because shockey failed to recognize the blitz, unlike Boss. Eli Manning would immediately throw to a spot where shockey should immediately turn around and he rarely does. That's one of the main reasons why they are better off without him.

it is very interesting how the giants played after he went down. he is good, but a major distraction. And Boss played very well. I say get rid of him. you can probably trade him for a few draft picks.

February 10, 2008  09:48 AM ET

if shockey were to leave, their offense will resemble the pats. theyd go to a 3 reciver offense with steve smith being the wes welker and buress being moss

I personally saw a much more mature and sedate shockey arrive at camp this past year. That being said, i'm sure that seeing his team compete and win all the way through the bowl , (without him ) has been a humbleing and enlightening exposeure to the reality that he is but an element in the total "chemisty" that is necessary for a team to win.

It's eli's team now, and I do belive he will be smart enough to figure that out.

50 yr. , I agree that shockey is a better run blocker than boss , but he'll get better (boss) and as far as a reciever... well, were gonna find that out in the near future. It looks like he might have a little softer hands than the shocker.. .
Unless a team is willing to blow the giants away with much more than a 2 he's not going anywhere !
Besides, when it comes to good tight ends, two is not too many !

February 10, 2008  09:55 AM ET

yankeefan21142 ...Lets hope they do not go that way...You just took Jacobs and Bradshaw out of the line up except to pick up the blitz.....That is not their Offensive Coordinators style, or system, nor should it be..They beat Green Bay, Dallas and the Pats BECAUSE they do not ignore the running game...Shockey will be the starting TE next year..write it down..If anything, they may run more two tight end formations now they can trust Boss..

February 10, 2008  09:58 AM ET

giantfbl ..I agree with you. Remember, Shockey has a history of injuries. Many times he plays through them, but he has missed a lot of games over his career..Reese is a very smart man, he needs them both, and he knows it..

February 10, 2008  10:11 AM ET

Trade him while his stock is high. you will lose strahan soon and everyone needs good O-line men. Eli can't throw the ball if he is on his back. he obviously is not a important cog to them winning, so if he causes problems with his mouth and attitude then ship his butt to miami or any other bottom dweller in the league.

February 10, 2008  10:11 AM ET

There is no such thing as coincidence

the best thing was to have kiki retire so manning could breath.
