Likeliest new face in Detroit

07:36 AM ET 07.03 | Plan B? Vincent Lecavalier will not be joining the Detroit Red Wings, neither will David Clarkson nor Nathan Horton. Stephen Weiss, on the other hand, could be wearing a Wings sweater next season. ... [As NHL free agency heats up Wednesday] the Wings' focus is shifting more to keeping two of their own guys than bringing in someone new. Lecavalier, 34, wanted a five-year deal, and got it from the Philadelphia Flyers, at a rate of $4.5 million per season. Clarkson, of New Jersey, is pushing for seven years at a $6 million average; this for a guy who has one 30-goal season to his credit. Boston's Nathan Horton wants to play in a warm climate. That makes Florida's Weiss the likeliest new face on the team.

Not a bad pickup for Det., if healthy. I don't get Vinny to Philly. It's D that is needed. If it was anyone but Homer, I'd say there now has to be a trade for at least a 3-4 pairing D-man

Doesn't make a damn bit of sense, does it?

I continue to expect Ken Holland to stay out of the big name free agent race and focus on re-signing his own. Any player asking north of $4M/y is not getting signed.

After the Coliocovo buyout, Holland has $10.7M to work with and 3 RFAs & 3 UFAs to sign. Signing all six guys to reasonable contracts puts the Wings over the cap.

$3.5M - Filppula
$2.5M - Cleary
$1.75M - Brunner
$1.25M - Nyquist
$1.25M - Andersson
$1.25M - Smith
-----------------------
$11.5M

If the Wings sign Weiss, it's because at least one of these guys prices himself off the team and Samuelsson gets bought out.

The RFAs will still be counted under their current contracts. I'm far too lazy to look up the numbers though.

Boston's Nathan Horton wants to play in a warm climate.

Ummm....wasn't he on The panthers before Boston?

Clearly he has concussion symptoms along with the shoulder ailments

I don't recall Horton or his agent making a statement to that effect.

It was a tweet from the commissioner's office. ;-)

Each unsigned RFA had a cap hit of $0.875M last year. That slides in under this year's cap, but leaves no room for additional signings.

His agent stated that Horton wants a fresh start. I thought that's what the Bruins provided him when they acquired him from the Panthers.

This actually surprises me.

Can we talk about this...
The Flyers bought out their starting goaltender and an aging center. They then used the money to get an aging defenseman who doesn't play defense, another aging center, and their starting goaltender hasn't been good since Clinton was the President. They don't have a back up goalie, and their defense is suspect at best.
And they are talking about trading Coburn, because apparently, they don't want any of their defenseman to actually play defense.
What is Holmgren's actual plan here, besides to give the rest of the NHL some good joke material.

And one other thing. 7.25 for Letang. The Pens better pray that Crosby and Malkin stay healthy the next decade, because all their depth players are going to be ECHL'rs.

I am not crazy about the deal, but whether or not anyone cares to admit it, Letang would have gotten that or more from many other teams, like it or not.

Pens also either signed or on the verge of signing Dupuis for four years for 15 Mil.

That's always a concern. However, both top lines are complete and signed long term that's assuming Bennett plays with Malkin and Neal. Kunitz and DuPuis are both signed long term to play with Sid.
