01:41 PM ET 07.03 | The fighter pay debate often comes up when people are looking for ways to criticize the UFC business model, but UFC president Dana White has an easy solution for that. Rather than provide incentives like the promotion has done for a number of years, the UFC could simply pump that money in to the fighters' salaries. White was asked if the fight night bonuses could be tossed to the side in favor of higher fighter pay and he was clear with his response -- yes. The fight night bonuses serve as an incentive for fighters to put on better performances and look for the finish. If the bonuses are gone, everyone could begin to focus on just doing what it takes to win to keep their spot on the roster rather than looking to put on a show. If that were to happen, it would be bad news for the sport.

Like any sport, the UFC will have to face the fact that making a lot of money attracts some really smart people who will work hard to get some of it. The agents and lawyers who specialize in sports compensation have taught this to much more powerful and financially deep leagues many times in the past. The ability to make hundreds of millions while paying the athletes a pittance is short lived and Dana and company are at the end of the bully period. The other pro sports organizations don't pay their athletes so well because of a notion of fairness, they do it because they have no choice. Welcome to the big leagues, you could have worse problems.
