Weis giving up play-calling

If you have a problem with the Notre Dame offense this fall, don't look at Charlie Weis. Or at least not only at Charlie Weis. In a hold-the-phone moment Friday, the Irish coach announced he would cede play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Mike Haywood and create a more by-committee approach on offense. Saying an offensive staff can be "stymied" by a "domineering" head coach with offensive ideas, Weis said the change will begin in spring practice and expects it to carry into the fall and beyond. It's a stunning sea change for the guy who showed up pronouncing that his teams would have a "decided schematic advantage" on the offensive side.

Finally. He knocked his ego down a few pegs, and this should help the team. Hopefully Haywood decides to change up the blocking. Zone blocking should help with all of the pressure that they get put on them. I expect more runs & screens since Haywood is also the RBs coach. Don't forget he coached Kevin Faulk at LSU. It should be screen city in South Bend.

Weis should just step down and fo back to being a pro assistant.

And lose all of that money. Yeah, that would be smart.

Mike Haywood ?

Haywood was an LSU assistant as running backs coach for several years but had very little input into calling plays or doing any coordiating. Sounds like Weis just wants to get things off of his back, but man he sure should have come up with a better Offensive Coordinator with more proven experience than Mike Haywood.

Besides, I thought that Weis was supposed to be this offensive genius and that is why he was brought to ND because of his major influence with the New England Patriots. I will surprised if this deal works out.

Weis maybe an offensive genuis, but if he can't coach young players to execute those genuis plays, what you get is 3-9 Notre Dame team that was embarassed all season long.

I thought a coach was paid to get players to excute. I think Weis is setting up an assistant as a fall guy for next year.

February 10, 2008  12:15 PM ET

weis has shown that he will always take the blame, not once has he put it on someone else. he stayed an extra 20 minutes past his scheduled press conference time after they got trounced by usc 38-0 to take all the questions they had. he always said it was his fault. so no, he's not setting up a fall guy. if the team doesnt show improvement next year he's gone anyway, so no point in making up false info bayou jim.

Haywood won't fail. He was a finalist for the Houston job and he has a lot of experience with good teams. I don't think the offense will be great next year. They will probably average around 20 points per game, but the defense is going to be kickass. They have a lot of good players returning, and now they have some players that were meant to play in the 3-4. Tenuta should help the ILBs as well. The linebackers had some trouble in the run defense last year. I expect that to change.

Weis is being a genius here. He's really trying to come across as less arrogant. I like the outlook on this year. I'm about as optimistic as you can be after the joke ND put on the field last year. Seriously. I need a facking refund on my season tickets for the **** I saw play last year. 7 wins is my prediction mostly because the schedule is as easy as hell.

February 10, 2008  12:23 PM ET

However, it won't matter who calls the play if the damn offensive line can't block. Hopefully T-Rob can step in at starting left guard and overpower the rushers. The recruits are good, but Sam Young was a big recruit as well, and he sucked last year.

The first thing Weis needs to give up is the fudge bownies, not play calling. Once again Weis has made the wrong decision.

February 10, 2008  03:10 PM ET

hahaha. You're so creative. A fat joke. Those haven't been done to death at all.

February 10, 2008  04:52 PM ET

Joe....you shoold have gone w/ a drive thru comment not a fudge brownie, bad play calling on you!!!!!

I believe ND will be back on top sooner than latter. My only question is who will be the QB. I give Clausen a pass last year-offensive line was young and inexperienced with a freshmen QB-ouch! As a freshman, Ryan Mallet had a better year but also had a better offensive line in front of him. If Clausen does not show improvement early in the year, how long will ND stick with him?

February 10, 2008  09:55 PM ET

while you all had written off notre dame after their loss to navy and did nothing but mock them, they still played football games. and last i checked Clausen had 6 td passes in two games, air force and duke. yes, it's duke. but at the same time, air force was not bad. This part where people are worried about him showing improvement... he did already in the last few games of the year. Is he good enough to be a quarterback for a full season playing the likes of usc and michigan? I dont know, maybe, maybe not. But this bull about him needing to show improvement has already happened, you guys were too busy watching ohio state make another great run only to get blown out in the National Championship game.

February 10, 2008  09:56 PM ET

check that. when you all had written off notre dame after the first quarter of the georgia tech game, they still played football. What i mean was as soon as Clausen came back from his benching, he improved.

Somehow this must be Ty Willingham's fault.

Right?!?

Umm.......yeah!

errr......right?

February 11, 2008  12:29 PM ET

I thought play calling is what made him special? Maybe it was the hot dog eating contest.

I just hope I can wear my Fighting Irish jersey this season - I just couldn't bear to go out in public with it on. Come to think of it, the inside of my house didn't see it either - only my dresser drawer.
