NFL's best unknown star

07:12 AM ET 07.04 | Anonymity doesn't come easy in the NFL, but Geno Atkins has embraced it. Granted, Atkins isn't built like most defensive tackles. But, at 6-foot-1, 300 pounds, he is the defensive tackle in the game right now. It's not even close. ... Atkins' 12.5 sacks last season were tied for the 15th-most in a single season by a defensive tackle in NFL history. What did this earn Atkins? He didn't get one vote for NFL Defensive Player of the Year, which went to the Houston Texans' J.J. Watt. He also didn't crack the top 20 in the NFL Network's list of top players in 2013, debuting at No. 36 after not getting ranked his first two seasons. Atkins is far from under the radar anymore, but he remains the NFL's best unknown star.

As he shouldn't.

Geno Atkin's 2012 stat sheet:
53 tackles
12.5 sacks
4 forced fumbles
0 fumble recoveries
2 pass deflections

JJ Watt's 2012 stat sheet:
81 tackles
20.5 sacks
4 forced fumbles
2 fumble recoveries
13 pass deflections

What about that stat line insinuates that Geno Atkins deserved votes over JJ Watt?

It is impressive what he did from the tackle position. DEs are lined up to get sacks. DTs? not so much. A much dirtier job.

July 4, 2013  09:08 AM ET

I'd have this dude on my team... anytime!

July 4, 2013  09:15 AM ET

I wonder how many unknown stars there are? Sadly, I'll never know.

July 4, 2013  09:31 AM ET

He looks to have a fairly trim waistline as far as DT's go.

Do we have to keep bringing up Bill Clinton?

I don't recommend he try Somalia. He would be ransomed back to the US for some serious cash.

Like that Bette Midler/Danny DeVito movie

Never heard of him...I guess that was the point.

That and the team he's on, Cincy is always being looked at as a losing team, with lots of playrer arrests,as well.

ifn yer on a 'loser team'? no one really cares.

How about that UDFA last year LNBKR Vontaze Burfict?

with some 170+ tackles [and not starting for a few games or he would have made more tackles and sacks.hurries and fumbles.]

This is why the' losing teams' best players get shuffled in without individual stats.

OBD,

And Atkins also makes the DE's look better also as Geno get's doubled teamed alot as well.

He did it better than most DTs,

And opens up the way too make the DE's too get the sacks as well, and good at stopping the run.

I wish Cincy had another DT.too keep up with him. as well.

DE M.Johnson got the franchise tag this year, only because they are looking at a replacement[cheaper] than what he's gonna want too stay in Cincy.

I'll watch how many sacks Johnson gets on any other team ,who will cough up 10+ milly a year.

Good luck on that one.

But Geno Atkins will stay in Cincy.[at least another year]

He goes in the fourth round because his "measurable" stats were not there? Arms too short and all? Not tall enough? or fat enough? No team, including the Bengals ( or they would have taken him sooner), saw this guy coming.

Stat: Only 15% of players taken in the fourth round ever become a regular starter in the NFL.

July 4, 2013  05:03 PM ET

So now that his agent has let us know about him and he is now officially "KNOWN" does that drop him down to #53 of known defensive players ?

50YF,

That's true, and it worked out,as some 1st picks haven't and are busts. aka CB Dre Kirkpatrick[,Cincy] used thier 1st pick on in 2012.

He hasn't seen too much on the field, but may work out.we'll see.

And even less for UDFAs like LNBKR Vontaze Burfict,Cincy bought for 1 grand.

basicaly just a tryout, beat the odds, and then does great and on the 1st string in his rookie year.

He didn't really play a full year his first year.

So I think first you have to start by defining where this 2nd-year slump would begin.
