07:31 AM ET 07.04 | BYU has a new marquee position in Provo. During the Bronco Mendenhall era, outside linebacker has seemingly become the most prestigious position on the Cougars' team. Names like Bryan Kehl, David Nixon, Jordan Pendleton, Spencer Hadley and, most notably, Kyle Van Noy have taken a lot of the spotlight since 2006. That was the year Mendenhall abandoned his 3-3-5 ' in favor of a more linebacker-friendly 3-4 alignment. ... This year's group may feature the best set of outside linebackers BYU has fielded during Mendenhall's tenure. Van Noy returns for his senior season to man the weakside (will) position, with Spencer Hadley ready to reprise his role at strongside (sam) linebacker.

BYU plays a fairly strong schedule and they'll face some diverse schemes.

Georgia Tech's triple option
Houston's air raid
Nevada's read option
Notre Dame and Wisconsin's traditional attacks,
Texas' up-tempo semi-spread
Utah and Boise State, etc ...

A 3-4 base defense is a better all-around scheme than their 3-3-5 considering the diversity they'll face.

The Colonel alludes to the infamous 13-man D deployed during the Vols goal line stand @ LSU under Dooley's leadership. The penalty for too many men on the field gave trailing LSU another shot from closer in, and Les Tigres availed themselves of the opportunity to avoid an embarrassing loss to the Vols at home.
