07:39 AM ET 07.04 | Wayne Gretzky's return to the NHL generally creates a buzz, and the team most often associated with it recently has become the Toronto Maple Leafs. However, sources say Gretzky and Tim Leiweke, the newly hired president and CEO of Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, have had several conversations in recent weeks about Gretzky joining MLSE in an executive capacity. It's unclear as to why discussions broke down, but sources say both sides agreed to put things on hold and may revisit the possibility down the road. Gretzky's role was not determined. Leiweke was hired by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment in April after he ended a lengthy relationship as chairman of the Sports and Entertainment wing of the Anschutz Entertainment Group.

Just a figurehead. Like when they used to show Anna Kournikova in the executive suite at the Joe.

He's better off being an executive on some celebrity golf course group...he seems to do good at that.....he's got the life of Riley in L.A..........sun all year round......he will have to adjust to Canadian winters all over again.

Well, he sucked behind the bench so, maybe..... The guy who owns all the important hockey scoring records needs to be in hockey. He deserves a shot at least.
