Will Toronto do something dumb Friday?

07:30 AM ET 07.05 | And so it goes -- another year, another raft of opportunities. Somebody will do something dumb. Somebody always does. The NHL free agent market opens Friday, and the Philadelphia Flyers have already agreed to a five-year, $22.5 million deal with bought-out center Vincent Lecavalier. ... There will be more silliness soon -- the Toronto Maple Leafs appear poised to make a splash -- and it will cause people to wonder if the owners learned anything, why the NHL just went through its third lockout in three negotiations. People will say nothing has changed. Well, no, nothing has changed in terms of the owners' and the agents' behavior. But that's the point. That's actually the reason why the NHL just went through its third lockout in three negotiations.

Clearly the dolt at Yahoo Sports is Chairman of the "He-Man, Leaf-Hater" club

But with TOR currently 29th in the League in terms of committed salary for next year, I fear the worst........

I'm not sure this is such a bad thing. Lot's of clubs are looking to dump salary to get under the cap - the Leafs are poised to help those clubs out and, hopefully, get value in some moves.

Im going to go out on a limb and say Nonis isnt a dummy. Nobody worth overpaying here.

It should not be a bad thing. I just have a feeling of impeding doom

I have not lived in The Big Smoke since 1999, but even I can feel the pressure building. OMG, the Leafs made the playoffs last year, they were THIS close to beating BOS, all we need is a Centre and we can plan the parade.......that kind of thing.

Pressure can make diamonds out of coal, but it can also explode and send shrapnel everywhere.

And so it begins.

The article is more about the owners and GMs having just gone through an extensive lock out only to come out spending like they always did. They site the Flyers, but you could also point to what Shero has done in Pittsburgh. The article also blames the agents for not having learned, but that is (nonsense) too. Its the agent's job to get their clients more money, its the GMs job to say no. The agents are doing their job, but the GMs sure aren't.

I have a feeling they've been waiting for this one for quite some time.

Who's been waiting?

Three Maple Leafs fans were bemoaning the fact that their team kept losing and might miss the playoffs.
"I blame the Nonis" said the first, "if he would sign new players then we could have a great team".
"I blame the players" said the second, "if they made more effort I am sure we would score more goals".
"I blame my parents", added the third. "if I'd been born in another city I'd be supporting a decent team!"

Yep. You can count on it. And .... the Leafs will make sure it goes according to plan. ;-)

Nastradamus foretold: Leafs will sign Scudieri

giving clarkson 7 years at 6 million is pretty dumb. And a few people in the know seem to think that THAT is what's going to happen today.

I'll be grinning ear to ear if it happens. It can only help me forget the Briere signing.

".....and it will cause people to wonder if the owners learned anything, why the NHL just went through its third lockout in three negotiations".

'Cause they're the dumbest bunch of the Big 4? With the dumbest Commisioner? How is it that hockey, the red-headed stepchild of the majors in terms of following and revenue, has lost more games to lockouts / strikes in the past decade than the other Big 3 combined?

I fear you are right. This ongoing one-upmanship between TOR and MTL is not good for either city.
