05:37 PM ET 07.05 | The Los Angeles Lakers are beginning to give up hope on their chances of retaining center Dwight Howard, which is fine because the team could be considering using that cap space to go after Miami Heat star LeBron James next offseason. Howard is currently being pursued by the Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors and more, all teams that have done a great job building for the future. The Lakers sound content agreeing to a sign-and-trade in order to potentially clear cap space for LeBron.

Good!!! Howard has decided to sign with the Rockets, now I hope we don't hear anymore about this crap!!!! Slide Gasol over to center, go get a decent PG and another PF and let's move on!!!

July 5, 2013  06:44 PM ET

My My My, the Lakers are now begging the King to help them.

Never!!!

Look at how all the Laker fans talked bad about Lebron for leaving CLE, now they want him.

Such hypocrites. Now they want him to leave his homeboy, Dwade, so Kobe can coattail on him.

Not going to happen. Dwade will get his 4th and 5th and Kobe might as well take the Lakers for every dime they have, cause he won't ever be in the finals again with the Lakers.

They may as well save some face now that they lost out on D12 and go after James. I hope he spurns them too. Serves them right for that condescending "pep talk" that Kobe supposedly gave him during the begging, oops I mean recruiting process.

I will believe it when I see a LeBron at a press conference with a Lakers logo behind him. Kobe will probably play 2 or 3 more years after next season, and does anyone really think they will co-exist? Get your popcorn ready for that one. They may have no choice but to bring back Phil Jackson to tame the egos.

July 5, 2013  08:40 PM ET

Do you REALLY think that LeBron would play on the same team as Kobe?

Lakers to make a run at LeBron James in 2014?

Another sequel!

It'll be more drama next year when this Houston experiment blows up. Houston has poised themselves to crash and burn the way they have acquired players who they can't keep long term, because they can't pay them all. Jeremy Lin just to name one has a $15M year coming up. Ha ha ha ha. He's good but is he worth $15M? NO. So now they've got him, have to pay him, and can't unload him. The Rockets have played themselves BADLY.

kobe makes 30 million a year. How on earth can the lakers afford LBJ and still field a team?

After this season, only Nash's 7 million contract is on the books.

Everybody and their dog have been waiting for this article to come out about 'Lakers' lore' bringing LeBron in. It's silly to think he'd ever sign there... That being said this is even more ridiculous:
"which is fine because the team could be considering using that cap space to go after Miami Heat star LeBron James next offseason." - COULD be considering? Please, every team will certainly be considering and offering to sacrifice their firstborn to sign him...

July 5, 2013  10:24 PM ET

Not so fast... I think Dwight stays if D'antoni goes & I think the lakers at this point will do whatever it takes.. Right or Wrong

July 5, 2013  10:53 PM ET

PLEASE no LBJ! Stay on the east coast where there is no competition. And THANK YOU Howard for picking Houston! He'll never win a championship.

Lakers fans DO NOT want the phony champion LBJ. He can only win when he has superstars surrounding him and his teammates are setting three point shooting records. Stay on the east coast.

Easy, Kobe could be gone along with his salary.

I hope he does too. Us Lakers fan DO NOT want that supposed champion on the west coast. Stay where there is no competition for him.

Rockets will move Asik and Lin's contract one way or the other. That's a given. I know ATL is interested in Asik, so that one is sure to be moved. As far as Lin is concerned, if they're unable to move him, they can amnesty him. Not a great choice, but there are options.
Howard, Parsons, Harden sounds quite formidable. And if Smith is acquired, they may have the best rotation on paper.

Wow, ESPN reporting Josh Smith also going to Houston in a sign and trade for Asik and Jeremy Lin. Supposedly Asik is refusing to play with Howard. Got to admit though, Josh Smith, Harden and Howard make a nice big three.
