09:01 AM ET 07.06 | As owner Mark Cuban promised, the Mavericks were "back open for business" quickly after losing out on Dwight Howard. It was just a few hours later that they came to terms with their preferred point guard, hammering out a four-year deal with Jose Calderon that is worth $29 million, several sources said. The Mavericks, after being rebuffed by Howard, wasted no time getting to work to try to fill out their roster. They had been paralyzed by the Howard situation for the first five days of free agency, but quickly moved on Calderon.

Just like in Toronto, Jose will help attract big name FA....maybe even Lebron next year!

GREAT!! So this was Cuban's big summer splash!! With a Spanish twist ;)

Good pickup, but it has to be a bit of a letdown after they were looking to hit a HR in free agency. They hit a line drive double.

Por Que, Bros?

LolThis is a more blizare signing than Iggy in GSWhy lock up 30+ year olds for 4 years?

Colangelo was famous for signing players just to claim he's doing something. Appears Cuban is doing the same.

Because we needed a PG in the worst possible way.

Now we have one and the rookie can grow into the role.

Why not Monta Ellis then? Much younger and a scorer.

Because Monta never met a shot he didn't like. Calderon is more efficient, better shooting percentage, less turnovers, etc. At 31, he's not exactly over the hill.

Sounds like a Mojito. It was well worth killing your championship team's chance to go for the repeat...

Man, Cuban really messed up this team.

Monta could still be an addition at SG.

Marc Stein ???@ESPNSteinLine

Mavs' post-Dwight interest in Bynum is legit. They ARE pursuing him. Yet it's been made clear they'll make detailed/careful evaluation first

How long are they going to observe him not working out for them?

Another good player on a not so good team.

I'm thinking they will look into his medical records and have him checked out. Also interview him to see where his head is at.

I think his head is as important as his knees. If he's hungry to play and appears to be healthy then you take a chance on him. Prime Bynum is still a top 2 Center in the NBA.

Had it not been for D12, I wouldn't have wanted to see Andrew leave. I'd like to have him back but his [interview] hunger might be suppressed post signature...
