Cowboys taking wait-and-see approach on Anthony Spencer

07:39 AM ET 07.07 | The aforementioned Anthony Spencer signed his one-year, $10.63 million tender as a "franchise" player last month and, after some talks between Dallas officials and agent Jordan Woy, the negotiations on a long-term extension to that deal broke off. One reason: The Cowboys want to see how Spencer -- who had 11 sacks in 2012, the first double-digit sack season of his six-year career ??? responds to playing left end in the 4-3. There are still five seasons, counting this year, on the seven-year, $78 million extension that Ware signed in 2009, so there's not much the Cowboys can do about that. Make no mistake, all parties remain cordial, but there's definitely a "wait and see" approach with Spencer, a player whom the Cowboys internally debated about the "franchise" tag before applying it.

Spenser probably wanted more money than Dallas is willing to commit until he proves he's more than a one year wonder. Happens all the time in the NFL.

Cowboys need major overhaul in the front office, from the owner up, before they will be contenders again...

This was news last month, interns.

Yep - Cowboy's fans need to hope JJ would rather have the money than the team. The sooner the better. Unfortunately JJ may look at this as his shrine. If he follows the Al Davis model, things get worse before they get better.

I think this was a good move. Spencer can be very good, but he tends to get lazy. Another contract year will keep him playing harder. At $10 million bucks a year he can't really be upset about it.

Wait and see approach? Not really. They are paying him as if he were the third best LB in the NFL ( average tag number of the 5 highest paid at that position.

Ya don't hear Spencer complaining. It's all guaranteed money.

July 7, 2013  10:07 AM ET

Cowboys fans are still waiting to see if Romo responds to playing QB.

Yep. Players getting pissed at the the franchise tag need to get a grip and man up. Bitching in the media won't get that long-term contract. On-field performance will.

They've already been waiting a lot of years CI.

And he never needed to prove himself in order to cash in!

I think watching more film was a requirement.

Bottom line - Spencer will get his money.

Soon.

July 7, 2013  10:37 AM ET

Of greater concern than Spencer's contract is the fact the Cowboys will be running a 4-3 cover 2 defense with DL's that may or may not work in that system.

It's got to be better than the Rob Ryan "Wishful Chaos 3-4". What a mess. I still don't understand how any of the Ryan family gets a job in this league.

John Abraham is still avaiable Cowboy Fans!!!

That 2007 draft they took Spencer in was one of the weirdest drafts of all time. the cowboys send cleveland their pick, they take Brady Quinn wit it, then they trade their 2, 3 and 5th round pics to the Eagles to take Spencer in the first round. The Eagles blow it and take Kolb and some other lesser lights.

In a way, the only team that got diddly out of the whole mess was the cowboys. It was a game of three card duds. someone had to win.

Three card dud........ that's an apt description.

Retreads. But anyway.. He will have to play lights out to get that extension. And its only gonna be 3 years because he's sneaking up on thirty.

Indeed. Cash rules. Better he plays... More money he'll get.
