08:33 AM ET 07.07 | The Atlanta Hawks wanted to trade for Monta Ellis on deadline day in February. They haven't lost interest, either. The Hawks, according to NBA front-office sources, have emerged as a serious suitor for Ellis in free agency on top of the deals Atlanta has already struck with former Utah Jazz forward Paul Millsap and returning sharpshooter Kyle Korver. With the future of restricted free agent point guard Jeff Teague still uncertain, Atlanta has roughly $10 million in available salary-cap space to potentially use on Ellis. Sources say that the Hawks have also given center Andrew Bynum some thought, but all the latest signals suggest that Ellis is the Hawks' top current target.

I wouldn't want Andrew Bynum anywhere near my locker room, so Ellis by default! Maybe JR Smith's brother is still available...

Ellis for Smith? This is why Atlanta continues to be a playoff doormat. Always the bridesmaid and never the bride......

Dude what else can you expect from a mid-market team? They made a play for Howard clearing cap space. He didn't budge. They made a pitch for Paul, he didn't even sniff.

I can't blame Ferry much for what he's done (other than signing Krover for $24M, that was stupid). BIG STARS don't wanna play in Atlanta, that's the bottom line. So we have NO CHOICE but to go with the likes of Joe Johnson or Ellis or second-rung stars.

It also hasn't helped that hawks are one of the dumbest drafters when they have had their chances. I'll be happy just to make playoffs or go to the second round. It's better than being a Bobcats fan.

I'm not happy they didn't bring Zaza back, he was the only "true center". Ferry could have offered Krover's deal to Zaza, he is not talented but tough minded and a big body. It doesn't look like Asik trade is happening if Ellis is signed. All the freeing up of cap space is moot if they cannot get a legit center. Not asking for Shaq, but atleast someone serviceable.

Just tank for a top 5 pick next season. Next years draft could rival the '03 Draft.
