08:49 AM ET 07.07 | The Detroit Red Wings would like to have forward Daniel Cleary back, but the only way that will happen is if they can shed some salary. The Red Wings have 22 players signed for $65 million, just over the $64.3 million salary cap. Their payroll will increase and they will have 25 players signed, two over the roster limit, once they come to terms with restricted free agents Brendan Smith, Nyquist and Andersson. Teams can go 10 percent over the cap during the off-season but the Red Wings don't want to add a significant contract and not be able to dump salary before the season.

By-product of having a front office with a clue. And after signing Joe McDonnell and Rick Leech from the Red Wings scouting staff, what the hell - the pipeline is now open.

The Stars love Gogo. They're paying him more than the Pens are paying LeTang, Scuderi, or Orpick.

(Changes next year when LeTang's extension kicks in).

I'm too lazy to look that up H but I believe you. However, I think whom ever 'loved' Gogo enough to give him that contract is long gone.

You're right about Joe, he had a hand in a lot of good signings. Dallas in the playoffs soon.

Given the cap situation in Detroit, was signing Alfredsson a good move?

I know he has friends on the Wings, Zetterberg being one, sometimes having fun again makes you want to earn your pay.

Yes. He's a right hand shot, something the Wings lack, and he is good on the pp, also something the Wings need. Article I read yesterday had Tatar and Emmerton in those numbers, both of whom may not be on the roster (at least to start). Also not sure but I think those cap numbers include Alfies bonus, which can be deferred to next year. As Holland said, they wanted more scoring and he thinks these guys can provide that.

Sometimes it makes all the difference in the world.

I think it's an excellent signing.

For sure.

He got 18+ for 4 years.

shed cleary, bring back brunner plus the guys mentioned in the article. helm (if he's back and hopefully he is) can take cleary's spot on pk which was his main asset.

I'm not sure Helm can replace what Dan Cleary brought to the table. On the PK yes, but Dan did so many other things extremely well that a smaller player will have a hard time doing. The Wings will miss Dan's physicality. He was hard to play against.

I agree. He was pretty big in the playoffs this year. I think he's lost a step from past post-seasons, as he was a very quick player, but he knows how to play along the boards and in front of the net. I think there's a chance to sign Cleary and zero chance for us to get Brunner back--term and price seem like he's asking more than Holland would be willing to be in for. Brunner's a talented scorer, but his cold streak in the middle of the year and his turnovers made it possible for Holland to think smartly about whether to re-sign him or not.
