07:25 AM ET 07.09 | Not only were hockey fans surprised to learn that Cory Schneider had been traded to New Jersey, but so was his new head coach. "No I didn't know. It was a surprise to me until Lou came down to our end of the table and told me," DeBoer revealed in an interview [Monday] with The Star-Ledger. "It was a real pleasant surprise, obviously." ... Perhaps Schneider will find himself in the same spot he had in Vancouver with Roberto Luongo if Brodeur plays the bulk of the games as the No. 1. Or maybe it is finally time to divide the starts evenly. "I think it's a situation that every coach wants. You have two great goalies," DeBoer said. "We'll have to see how it plays out. They're both professionals."

A much less pleasant surprise? Ryane Clowe.

Why did Clarkson get more years and money than Clowe?

And why would the coach know what Lou is going to do, odds are the coach won't be around next year.

QUOTE(#4):

Fact: Marty Brodeur had more goals in the 1st 3/4's of last season than Ryane Clowe.

And the funny thing is, he still came within 5 points of Clarkson, who by his standards was having a great year.

Fact, Ryan Clowe had more assists in a 3 year period than David Clarkson has in his CAREER.
73 assists in his career. Clowe had 106 in 3 years.
Clarkson's three biggest point total years - 46, 32, and 24

Clowe got over paid, but what Clarkson got was Scott Gomez/Wade Redden territory

Because Clarkson is not dealing with Lou Lamoriello ... and Clowe is.

So, Clarkson had a better season than Clowe by your own admission, but because Clarkson is now making $400,000 more per season he's in Scott Gomez territory?Keep telling yourself what you have to. Eventually, Parise, Clarkson, and anyone else who dares depart the good ship Devil will all be awful, terrible, overpaid players. I mean, they all gotta turn 50 at some point, right?

He had more points in more games, I wouldn't really call it better. I mean look at Clarkson's career and Clowe's. Tell me who the better player is? Clarkson has had 1 1/4 good years in his career. You are getting pretty defensive about it.

And he is getting paid 12 million more.

As usual Leaf fans will defend players to death.....or cut....or traded. :-)

A couple of summers ago Connolly and Lombardi were the latest saviours.

I hated both and you know it. Nobody is even remotely looking at Clarkson the way they looked at those two.And at least we got Franson in the Lombardi deal.

But its so much fun to rub it in. ;-)

QUOTE(#10):

Not getting defensive about it at all. It was below market value, and the Leafs took it to fill a need, whereas Clowe went to the highest bidder. I can't predict the future, I can only hope it's a good fit, and while I don't like the term all that much if in 5 years he's not producing what's a $10.5 m buyout when the cap is around $90 million to a team like Toronto? In the end, I think the Leafs' top six is better today than it was a week ago. That's all that matters.

How can you say a guy who averages 18 goals and 33 points in an 82 game season got below market value on a 7 year deal worth over 5 mil a year?
Your own GM said it was a steep price. Clowe might have gone to the highest bidder, but his price was still less than Clarkson's. And Clowe has been a much better player over his career (averaging basically 20 points more a season). So yes, I think Clowe got way over paid. I think his contract is pretty terrible. But I would much rather give him his contract than give Clarkson the contract he got.

Ah Pogge, the better choice.

Better than Alex Edler, Johan Franzen, Tyler Kennedy, Kris Versteeg, and Grabo?

Must be you drafted him higher.
