Bruce Pearl was fired up after his team defeated LSU on Saturday. He ripped into his players in the locker room afterward for their lack of offensive execution and was still red-faced 30 minutes later. But the UT men's coach appeared even more irate about what happened to John Brady. Brady was fired as LSU's coach Friday after going 8-13 this season. Two years ago, he led LSU to the Final Four. Pearl said he called Brady on Friday to show support. "I'd like to see more athletic directors and presidents say this is embarrassing," Pearl said about the abrupt firing. "Did he get caught cheating (in) recruiting? What law did he break? No. And here's the scary thing: We're now able to say publicly that he didn't win enough games.

People expect coaches to get to the Final Four every year like its a guaranteed or something. Whatever happened to loyalty and sticking thru the tough losses?

February 10, 2008  05:40 PM ET

Hey, I agree that firing a coach that is winning games is crazy, and embarrasing to the university who does it. But this guy was 8 & 13. Coaches are hired to win games. Period. Everything else that is expected of them is secondary to that. So, a coach should negotiate a deal when he is hired that will protect him when the inevitable firing takes place. Then quit whining.

I like Bruce more and more every year. He may even make a Tennessee fan out of me. As an LSU fan, this is embarrassing.

Like Janet Jackson sang, "What have you done for me lately?".

Bad mistake on LSU's part.

February 11, 2008  12:11 AM ET

Coach Brady was given ll seasons and only one trip to the Final Four in basketball which is commendable but he had some pretty good talent on that team. He doesn't have a winning record in the SEC and for a school that prides itself in all athletics, he didn't produce what they are looking for. He'll find another school with less pressure and probably do well.

February 11, 2008  01:31 AM ET

Yeah INCSOC, I hear you. Bruce Pearl is one of the best things to happen to Division 1-A college basketball in decades.

I dunno if he'll stay at Tennessee for the majority of his career, but I think we're seeing the first chapters of a coaching legend in the making right now.

February 11, 2008  07:54 AM ET

So, teams are suppose to keep coaches as long as they dont break the rules?

Give me aq break, your job is to win; and if you cant produce... I don't see why they wouldnt fire you. As a matter of fact, a winning coach would just as easly leave a school, who has been loyal to him, for more money.

February 11, 2008  10:32 AM ET

Of course the other coaches would want John Brady to continue coaching at LSU. That was a guaranteed win for them. Now they might have to actually contend with LSU under a new coach. Its all about the numbers for them. They dont want to get fired for not winning either. Now the handwriting is on the wall....win or get fired!

February 11, 2008  10:35 AM ET

Brady underachieved art LSU. There's no reason for the level of performance that the men's team has - or hasn't - achieved. Maybe in his next job Brady will finally figure out how to recruit a point guard.

February 11, 2008  04:31 PM ET

The fact of the matter is that 2 years ago, LSU was in the Final Four. Then, Big Baby went pro. That left LSU on the ropes last year but they have something like the 13th recruiting class in the nation for next year. LSU should have given Brady another year.... he's a good coach & deserves it. Preach it, Bruce!

Welcome to the SEC Pearl. There is NO FREE Ride in the SEC.

February 11, 2008  06:43 PM ET

Actually, TNVOLTHEWAY, Big Baby was their last season, and they STILL did terrible. To go from the Final 4 to missing even the NIT in one season is not very good. The only players they lost were Tyrus Thomas and Darrell MItchell. Like someone above said, he couldn't recruit a point guard, or last year's team would have been INFINETELY better.

The Final Four argument is an ignoratn argument from people not familiar with the program or the situation. Brady had a LOSING SEC conference record. They got outright embarrassed 2 times in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Since Brady has been at LSU only 13 players in 10+ years have actually graduated. And 40 players have left the school prematurely....only 4 leaving for the NBA. The rest transferred out because Brady in a jerk.

The miracle Final Four run was probably one of the worst things that could have happenned to the program. It allowed Brady almost 2 more years to screw up the program. LSU got lucky that year, winning 2 of their games in the tournament at the last second and OT. They were ABSOLUTELY not one of the best 4 teams that year. Brady shold have been fired after getting DESTROYED by UAB in the tournament 2 years before that.

It's ABOUT TIME!

it was the right call if you think not i highly doubt you are even an lsu basketball fan meaning you don't understand the situation
